What are the requirements for 300 weeks? What stage must Roger reach in the US Open to guarantee that feat?

Shanghai is the week after Beijing, so potentially 1000 more points there for Djoko.
If we assume Djokovic wins in USO, Beijing and Shanghai there is nothing Federer can do in USO, he will then need points from Shanghai. Final in USO won't be enough. So to ensure #1 for 300 weeks sooner he needs to match Djokovic in USO. To ensure 299 weeks, however, a USO QF is enough.

Realistically speaking, Federer's #1 ranking is secure until after Shanghai so long as he reaches the US Open final... Djokovic defends the full 2000 at USO, whereas Roger only defends 720. So if Roger gains 480 by reaching the final (and Novak defends the title) that would leave him 1375 points above Djokovic heading into the Asian swing.
In that scenario, Novak's only hope of regaining #1 by the end of Shanghai (and thus leaving Federer on 299 weeks) would be if he won both Beijing (500 points) and Shanghai (1000 points) and Roger decided to skip Asia altogether.

I agree with that, but we were discussing what was guaranteed, not what was realistic. I always felt that if Federer was going to lose the #1 this year it would happen the week his 3000 indoor points come off. If it happens, it will be the first calendar year since 2003 with more than one change at the top.

1325 points if Djokovic wins US Open+Beijing+Shanghai, which is unlikely imo.
That is if Fed loses the US Open final to Djokovic and then skips Shanghai (he skips Beijing anyway), and Djokovic also wins Beijing and Shanghai, then Djokovic would get the number 1 back after Shanghai and Fed would stop at 299 weeks.
EDIT : I saw that Litotes had already perfectly answered you

Thank you for the explanation.
It seems 300 is almost a lock unless djokovic goes on a tear.
Next target: 312 which is 6 years at world #1. I'm greedy I know...

If so, it'd be like winning a slam in the "strong era"; breaking the record in the supposedly-stronger ATP field.

I mean breaking the record set by a strong woman playing against the "weak" WTA field while facing the "stronger" opposition of the ATP; a tougher opponent means a more admirable achievement.

It would be fun, but for now - between Court, Evert, Navratilova and Graf - practically all WTA records are out of reach (also for the current Women, of course - no new records there for the foreseeable future). Fed's 237 weeks in a row as #1 is the only place ATP beats WTA, I think. Unless you count minor things like serve speeds and most aces, or gender specific ones like fifth set records etc. You think Nadal's 81 straight on clay was great? Evert has 125. You think Federer's 10 slam finals in a row was fantastic? Graf has 13. On the other hand, Nadal's 7 RG is as many as Evert managed so the ATP has an opportunity there. Fed will have a harder time with Navratilovas 9 Wimbys. And Djokovic might as well not think about Courts 11 AOs.

Fed enters his 299th week as no.1... a quarter final in Shanghai will secure the milestone of 300, c'mon Fed! You can do it!
