PRESS RELEASE
12 September 2012
Draw for 2013 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas to be held on Wednesday 19 September

The ITF announced that the Draw for the 2013 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas will be held at the London offices of title sponsor BNP Paribas on Wednesday 19 September at 11:00 local time (10:00 GMT).

A total of 130 nations have entered the 2013 competition, with the top 16 nations contesting the World Group and the other nations taking part in one of three regional zones: Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa.

The line-up for each group in 2013 will be confirmed after this weekend’s Davis Cup ties on 14-16 September, which include the two World Group semifinals, eight World Group play-offs and eight zone group ties. In the World Group semifinals, Spain host USA in Gijon, and Argentina are at home to Czech Republic in Buenos Aires.

The seeds for the 2013 Davis Cup Draw will be based on the latest ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking of Monday 17 September, although the two finalists in 2012 will automatically be the top two seeds in the 2013 World Group.

2013 Davis Cup Draw: World Group

LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN: The Draw for 2013 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas was held at the offices of title sponsor BNP Paribas on 19 September. The draw for the World Group took place alongside four of the six draws for the Zone Groups.

The World Group ties in 2013 will be played over four weekends during the year:

- World Group first round: 1-3 February
- World Group quarterfinals: 5-7 April
- World Group semifinals and play-offs: 13-15 September
- World Group Final: 15-17 November

Reigning champions Spain, who will continue their title defence when they travel to Czech Republic for this year’s Final, have been handed an away tie against Canada in the World Group first round next season.

Spain, the No. 1 seeds, have met Canada just once before at the same stage of the competition in 1991. On that occasion, played on clay at the La Manga Club in Murcia, the home side prevailed 4-1, but the conditions are likely to be very different for their visit to Canada in February.

Spain’s opponents in this year’s Final, Czech Republic, are the No. 2 seeds and face a tricky trip to Switzerland to start their campaign. The Czechs hold a 6-2 head-to-head lead between the two nations, although they lost when the teams last met on Swiss soil in 1998.

The two losing semifinalists in 2012, USA and Argentina, both open their accounts in front of home fans in 2013. The Americans take on Brazil and the Argentines face a tough fixture against Germany.

France have also been handed a home draw in the opening round. Arnaud Clement’s first tie in charge, having taken over from Guy Forget as the new captain, will be versus Israel, who the French have never lost to in their three past meetings.

Kazakhstan, who came through a local derby play-off with Uzbekistan to retain their World Group status, begin next year against Austria, while Italy host Croatia. The Davis Cup champions from 2010, Serbia, travel to Belgium in what will be a first meeting between the teams since Serbia began competing as an independent nation.

World Group

Canada [c] v Spain [s]
Italy [c] v Croatia [s]
Belgium [c] v Serbia [s]
USA [s] [c] v Brazil
France [s] [c] v Israel
Argentina [s] [c] v Germany
Kazakhstan [s] [c][*] v Austria
Switzerland [c] v Czech Republic [s]

Key
[s] = Seeded nation
[c] = Choice of ground[*] = Choice of ground decided by lot

The home nation is listed first for each tie.

wells an unseeded team you were bound to get a tough team, and probably lose. Kazakhstan was about the only draw you'd want, that's like Canada, we were unseeded and got France this year, unseeded again and we get Spain. Ya gotta win a tough tie and breakthrough before you're gonna become seeded and get easier draws

Well that was fun for us, I was saying I hope we don't get someone as good as France, and what happens, we get the best, well WG playoffs for us again next season, I would have been really happy with anyone 6-8, or even the Czech's, as they did lose in R1 last year, I can't help but laugh at our luck.

Good lord, France away...
Team Israel of the last 6-7 years are miracle makers, but beating France in an away game - probably on clay, on which Israelis can't play - is too much of a miracle, even for them.

Well...Croatia and Kazakhstan would be more easy teams for us, specially Croatia playing in Brazil in clay courts.

yeah but like I said the odds on that aren't great, 75% of the time you're not going to get Kazakhstan or Croatia, it's not a terrible draw, it's the way it is, odds are you were going to draw a team that you'd probably lose to, it's set up that way
