It had humour indeed, but IMO It's very dark and cynical humour, as the characters (especially the cops) ask themselves what the point is of what they do, because it is all so corrupt and 'the game never changes'.

Definitely, that is a big part of the show.
As for Homicide, the book is good from what I can remember. The show is a little tedious though. Being an episodic procedural, it's not much like The Wire. |

Yes, it certanly is the best. Sopranos not far behind and Game of Thrones catching up, but the Wire is actually a piece of art and not only entertainment. It grows from beeing a criminal series to become a series showing the decay of a whole society and complex problems with no solutions at sight.

I think Boardwalk Empire has really come into its own now too. It is pure pulp, but it is just so handsome and authentic. Plus, it has populated its world in a way comparable to The Wire. |

It is slow, but I don't mind because I don't think they intend to be slow on purpose. They just want to take their time to let the characters and the story develop in a believable, realistic way. As the show develops you get that the mess that is Baltimore just can't be cleaned, and because of the slow, step-by-step explanation you also get why that is.

'The Wire' is excellent. For a multitude of personal reasons I adore 'Homicide: Life on the Street' (one of the first cop shows I got into) dearly, but 'OZ' (last season excluded) probably remains my favorite HBO show. 'Rome' was good as well.

It's definitely one of my favorite shows that was able to complete its run. Still put Rome and Deadwood higher but their runs were prematurely cut short.

It was absolutely, positively, utterly brilliant!
After watching The Wire, I finally understood what growing up in the ghetto is like, how local politics and trade unions really work, and what life as a policeman fighting the war on drugs is all about.
Other shows I highly recommend are The Sopranos and Six Feet Under.
