I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

Federer so lucky the surfaces were slowed down, Henman would've thrashed him every time otherwise

The fact is, success in DC is largely determined by what country you come from or play for in the first place, which most players haven't had any control over.

Didn't Henman beat Fed in a few Basel finals?

In 2002, Wimbledon altered its grass, creating a thicker, more durable turf that slows the ball down and allows it to bounce higher, rather than skid, and baseliners have ruled ever since. Jim Curley, tournament director at the U.S. Open, said organizers began slowing their own courts down in 2002, adding extra sand to the paint, and did so again before the 2003 tournament to make the court fair for baseliners and serve-and-volleyers alike. Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, who has a rifle-like serve, beat Mr. Federer in last year's final, demonstrating that a fast server can still do plenty of damage on the surface. But Mr. Del Potro, when healthy and on, also has a true all-around game.

Only 16 posts back in 2003? MTF was a tiny little workshop back then.

I know, and I loved being part of it.

Some reactions to those great highlights:
- Tim was so talented and a fast court helped give him the punch to beat the top players.
- Almost surprising to me that Henman only played in 3 TMS finals, when he was in countless GS SFes.
- So nice to see a fast court, indeed! That was when Paris was played on carpet, yes?
- Miss the old ATP TMS shields.
- When young guns Ferrero/Roddick/Fed were fighting to take the #1 ranking.

In many ways he was the late 90s/early 00s David Ferrer, always there and about, winning smaller tournaments and reaching R4/QF in Masters and also managing SF's in a number of GS events. He was inferior to Ferrer though because he could never string together everything in one tournament aside from that time in Paris, thus why Ferrer will always beat Henman in a battle of the also runs.

It's interesting to see this old thread revived though, I used to be a massive Henman fan and was always so frustrated that he couldn't make that last step into consistent Grand Slam challenger. It's also interesting as it heralded Henman's last great year, winter 2003 to winter 2004. He reached the final of the next Masters event (Indian Wells 2004), QF at Monte Carlo (on clay!), somehow quite incredibly reached the Semi-Finals at Roland Garros and was a set and a break up, something which I still don't understand given his general uselessness on clay in 90% of the other clay tournaments he competed in, QF at Wimbledon (if the courts hadn't slowed he might have had a chance) and then after an indifferent American hard court season came back into form for a US Open SF and then lost close matches to Safin and Rodick before beating Coria at the Masters Cup.

It seemed like he was finally on the path to putting together the talent we all knew he had with the mental ability to regularly go deep into tournaments and even play on clay...well then 2005-07 happened, his game went off a cliff, as did his body and he never recovered that 2003/4 form. A real shame.

It's funny that Roland Garros 2004 was probably Tim's best chance at a Grand Slam title along with the Aussie Open in 2000, how the hell he stuffed that up when seeds were falling all over the place I don't know, and the infamous 2001 Wimbledon.

My favorite week in the history of tennis. It's a shame we will probably never see a player again with a game as beautiful as Tim's.

The Tiger's 2003 Bercy title and 2004 RG semi-final runs were both such great tennis memories.

I loved his playing style. I was very happy to finally see him live against the silver fox Sanguinetti at Queen's in 2003.
