I agree with the first part, he plays better with more matches. Well, as long as he doesn't win Nice (Winners of past 2 years lost R1 in RG in long 5 sets). Point-wise, winning a tournament is still better than a R4 in a slam, but he really needs good performance in RG to boost his stock. I still think the week before slam should be a practice week on the slam ground. But I'm sure he knows best to schedule himself, we'll see how that turns out for him.

Gilles should be 13th in the race and 12th in the rankings after this week unless I'm miscalculating something. There was a huge gap between the top 11 and the rest so he still has a ways to go to get to the top 10. Unfortunately, unless he performs at the level he showed this week he likely won't make the top 10 until the end of the year where he did so poorly last year and can make up a lot of ground.

He also sealed the deal with the Olympics in my opinion. He created some big distance with Gasquet and with the horrible luck for Benneteau, there's no realistic way he won't be selected.

Default Re: 2012 Schedule and Ranking

http://live-tennis.eu/race this site said he's 14th on the race, but only 5 pts behind Tipsy, so close enough.

If he can maintain his health, then I think he will maintain his form. He said he's encouraged by this match, although he said he squandered BP chances because he didn't play freely (I supposed he means he's hesitant). He always said that he needs this kind of big matches to build confidence, he still couldn't handle the big points well yet. But he's definitely building up some now.

And I agree with Olympics, there's really no way he won't go, as long as he stays healthy (fingers crossed for that). If he can stay at 12, he won't need to draw the top 4 in Round of 16 in the next 2 masters and RG. Although staying at 12 won't be easy, Almagro is playing one extra tourney then Gilles, and that's Barcelona, potentially, he can get a lot of points. Otherwise, Gilles just need to keep pace with Nico. Monaco is sadly out of the picture at the moment, Gael only plays the next 2 masters, so he also needs to keep pace with Gael. Well, this week is a big boost, now he is at least in a favorable position to get that very important 12th seeding in RG. I just hope that his back won't act up.

he needs to just keep playing like he has done this week, if he does he will be picking up points all over the place. i'm confident he can make the top 10 again

Gilles entered Queens Club, I assume/hope that will be his only warm-up tournament. He's playing a lot and will need some rest.

It is.
Not on any entry list of the week before Wimby. I assume he'll play that exhibition tournament for warmup, as he always does.

Boodles is on 19th - 23rd June 2012, it's the exo before Wimbledon.

http://www.theboodles.com/

Djokovic Returns to The Boodles

Novak Djokovic will keep his winning Wimbledon formula by returning to The Boodles tournament at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire ahead of this year’s Championships.

The World No.1 played at The Boodles last year and just over two weeks later he lifted his first Wimbledon trophy. Now Djokovic has chosen to return to the traditional Wimbledon warm-up event to prepare for the defence of his Wimbledon title.

"I enjoy playing at Stoke Park and look forward to preparing the defence of my Wimbledon title at The Boodles," said Djokovic.

Djokovic’s Davis Cup team-mate and World No.8 Janko Tisparevic, former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, John Isner, Marin Cilic, Gael Monfils, Stanislas Wawrinka, Aleksander Dolgopolov and Gilles Simon are the other top players confirmed to play at The Boodles 2012.

In addition to Djokovic, other major names are expected to come to The Boodles for one-off exhibition matches as they put the finishing touches to their Wimbledon preparations. Last year Andy Murray and the Bryan Brothers were among those who played matches at The Boodles.

“We’re thrilled that Novak is coming back to The Boodles for the seventh consecutive year and we hope the formula for him like it did last year,” said Patricio Apey, The Boodles Tournament Director and Founder. “Players love the relaxed atmosphere at The Boodles and our courts are Wimbledon standard so they know it’s great preparation for the Championships.”

Confirmed players for The Boodles 2012:

Novak Djokovic
Juan Martin Del Potro
John Isner
Janko Tipsarevic
Marin Cilic
Stanislas Wawrinka
Aleksander Dolgopolov
Gael Monfils
Gilles Simon

Regarding Queen's, he's playing double with Roger-Vasselin.

More for his schedule:
He's defending Hamburg, as expected. It seems Hamburg is the only tournament he plays between Wimby and Olympics (only 3 weeks in between). It's probably not easy to go from grass to clay and back to grass. I hope he goes to the Olympics Opening Ceremony (assuming he's playing the O)

I'm sure he'll play the Olympics, he doesn't like the long stay in the U.S. anyway so I can't think of any reason not to play and he has to be selected. I'm surprised he hasn't been asked about it in any interviews though that I've seen.

While grass, clay, grass isn't good preparation he almost has to defend the title in Hamburg, it's his highest point total on the calendar.

Gilles' next tournament is Bangkok, and that's if he can recover well enough from the shoulder problem. He has 3 weeks. If I understand correctly, infiltration works to speed up the regeneration of tissues...

His ranking unfortunately has dropped down to 20 after USO and 21 if Roddick somehow manages to get to SF, which I of course think it's not possible (no disrespect to Roddick but a huge Nole fan I am). Which means things will get really tough from now on, like he won't be seeded for Tokyo nor Shanghai unless there's numerous w/d. Still, his race pts is at around 17, and he has about 200 pts more than the 20th player in the Race. So his goal, for sure, is to keep that ranking, or possibly try to move back up to top 15. But anyway, he has about 5 tournaments remained (if things turn out as planned), so plenty of time to catch up, as long as his body cooperates.

All the guys behind him before the US series ( Dolgopolov, Kohlschreiber, Gasquet, Raonic, Wawrinka...) got into form while Gilles got injured , and in consequence he is dropping ranking places.

Default Re: 2012 Schedule and Ranking

Unfortunately because many of the top guys missed out this summer, the 10-20 ranked guys all picked up a lot of points in their absence and moved up the rankings. They likely won't be able to defend these points next year but it will be tough for Gilles to keep up in the next 12 months because he lost out on all these points this summer. That being said, even though he dropped to 20th, he's still really close to 4 or 5 guys in front of him so one good tournament and he's back to number 15 or 16. If Gilles can get his serve back, indoor hardcourts are usually good for him except for last year so I am hopeful he can make up some ground in the fall.
