You want a situation where there are enough players able to make a living to keep the lower ranks competitive, but to allow the talent to rise to the top on the basis of their abilities, not on the basis of their ability to get financial help to keep them going because the challengers do not pay enough for them to break even, let alone make money. It's not healthy for the sport if too many drop out because they can't afford to give themselves a decent shot at making it. If prize money distribution was geared so that, say, the top 200, 250 can break even and perhaps make a small profit after expenses from a decently full schedule, it would be better for the long term health of the sport.
Exactly how? Because it would increase the number of parasites who get paid for doing nothing, i.e. not winning anything? Enough with this socialist crap. If they suck in their job it's their problem. Why should somebody else pay for their fail of career?
And true talent will always find a way to break through.

In other words tennis should be the top 10 and the rest can get lost cause they won't be good enough to the elite? If you can't see relatively the lower ranked players and the ones starting out unless they are from a powerful federation or have plenty of sponsors are struggling financially. Then you are a gloryhunter, all the levels of the tour needed to be catered for funny the top guys yes Fed and Nadal even played Futures events.

It's not because they are crap, the ITF and ATP are taking too much of the money that is generated by the players. No shit talent will rise through eventually, but 70-100 ranked players shouldn't be struggling financially in an elite sport like tennis let alone players who are fighting through the Futures and Challengers to make it on the main circuit. That's not even close to socialism or subsidies.

No, but I don't see why a player ranked 250 (as suggested by the poster I replied to) should be able to make a living off losing 1R non-stop.

If he's losing R1 non-stop he's not going to be playing challengers for very long is he, so he's not going to be making enough money to make a living.

Do we know what percentages in other major sports the players get from the total? I would love to compare them to tennis, because that 15-20% seems ridiculously low, isn't it?

It's youth sport that should be catered, not professionals who do their job poorly.

Ok, change No.250 who loses 1R all the time for a player who floats in Top-200 for years. My question still stands.

These people you mock are a necessary part of the structure of the tour. Or who do you think very talented players are going to beat on their way up the rankings?

Or maybe you think we don't need 1700, 1800 ranked players. 150 is enough, we can do away with most challengers and futures.

Getting this back to the original topic, I doubt any such boycott will happen.

It's interesting to see the players getting more forceful about making improvements for their benefit. I just hope it doesn't only benefit those who need it least, and that things are dealt with sensibly and professionally. I don't want to see boycotts.

I just don't think this is going to happen. If the percentage that has been stated is real, then it is not fair. I know the Slams use some of the money to promote the sport in each country. But like any big institution or bureaucracy or charity the bulk of the money tends to go for "ädministrative"
purposes. That tends to mean big salaries for top officials.

Lower ranked players should get more of the purse. And more money should be paid out for the early rounds.

Is there actually a formula being used at the slams? Or are they just arbitrarily increasing the purse each year based on inflation? Does the 20% include money made through tv coverage?

I'm not saying we need to get rid of them. I only object the idea of paying them more.

the real percentages in slams are higher, at least if you include the female players, from what I've read.

Besides, what should be measured is the % of the profit, not of the total revenue.

Finally, I'm not against the idea that slams would give money to the more global organization of tennis, not just to "Stakhovsky's bigger flat" or "the Bryans' pool". But of course if the national federations keep that only for themselves to be "rich federations with a lot of infrastructures" and it doesn't benefit the other federations ... I would like the money to be internationally spread by the ITF as it's international tournaments.

Even though players ranked below about 80 do not even make any money at all? I think the sport is wealthy enough that people further down the chain should be able to earn enough to live on and not have to play ridiculous schedules, cut corners, or sponge off others so they can chase their dreams.

Well if what I'm suggesting is socialism to you then up the workers.

They should pay more for 2nd and 3rd exits,
and for Qualies. Not for 1st round losses because then all those half-injured players will compete.

The amount of money to upgrade those payments is big but not huge.

I see MTF members pay money for those players before we have a Super Tournamentin Dubai.
That is really not probable.
