__________________________________________________ ___________________
Possible Candidates
James Blake - popular old-timer
Robby Ginepri - same as above
Ryan Sweeting - former top 100 player, currently ranked 116
Tim Smyczek - currently ranked 180
Denis Kudla - 2nd highest ranked American youngster after Harrison at 197
Alex Kuznetsov, current ranking of 211
Tennys Sandgren - college player that has good results since turning pro, currently at a career high of 266
Rhyne Williams - same as above
Daniel Kosakowski - similar situation as Tennys and Rhyne
Jack Sock - may give it to him to defend his 2nd round points

Kalamazoo
Mitchell Krueger is likely the favorite for the Kalamazoo USTA 18's National Championship. He is the top American Junior on the Junior Circuit (No.5), making back to back semi at Junior Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Don't know if Christian Harrison will take participate (highest ranked American Junior on the Pro Circuit).

Qualifying WC Candidates (8 spots)
US National Playoff Winner
Sandgren, Williams, and Kosakowski would likely get the wildcards if they don't get the md wc or make the qualifying cut.
Andrea Collarini, has good results the past few months but on clay (can't remember his last hardcourt tournament), is at a career high ranking of 321
Jack Sock, will probably get it if not offered md wc
Robert Kendrick, not sure
Eric Quigley (NCAA Runner-Up)
Mitchell Krueger if he doesn't win Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo Runner-Up (not sure)
Austin Krajicek
Chase Buchanan, recent grad who has great results so far this summer
Other young candidates: Devin Britton, Bjorn Fratangelo, Bradley Klahn, Christian Harrison, Mitchell Frank, Alexander Domijan (see below how they compared in ranking).

USO wildcard competition*

The USTA will award one US Open men’s singles main-draw wild card to the American man who earns the most ATP Tour Ranking points at two of the following four USTA Pro Circuit events:

•$50,000 Binghamton, N.Y. (week of July 16)
•$50,000 Lexington, Ky. (week of July 23)
•$100,000 Vancouver, BC (week of July 30)
•$100,000 Aptos, Calif. (week of August 6)

So who do you think will get the wildcards? I ended up making the thread afterall .

I think Lleyton Hewitt will probably get a wildcard and likely Blake as well. The other tbd wildcard might go to Ginepri or Sweeting which means the USO wildcard competition is the only option for the upcoming players. I hope Sandgren, Williams, or Kosakowski wins it.

I forgot that if Hewitt gets one, it likely be the AO reciprocal wildcard. I think Sock will get the spare wildcard.

All the Americans are out of Aptos with the exception of Johnson, who already secured a wildcard being a NCAA champ, so Kudla should get the wildcard.

Steve Johnson, who was given a main draw wild card to the US Open last year as NCAA champion, topped the men's version of the competition that Burdette won. There were four men's events, with the best two results counting, but Johnson only played last week in the $100,000 Aptos Challenger. He won the tournament, beating former USC teammate and good friend Rob Farah in the final 6-3, 6-3, and rather than give Johnson a discretionary wild card (there are five remaining, not including the French and Australian reciprocals and the US junior champion's wild cards, which are not subject to a committee decision), he will be selected instead from this result. For more on Johnson's wild card see tennispanorama.com.

Well, I guess Kudla is not guaranteed the wildcard. This could get interesting.

When I first read that I thought Kudla was getting shafted, but, the winner of Aptos gets 100 pts, so Johnson is ahead of Kudla for this WC fair & square. I guess the NCAA WC is not guaranteed, its only given to Americans now, so maybe that was their justification for giving Johnson the playoffs WC instead of the NCAA WC. Now the committee can get together and decide who gets the other 4 WCs instead of 3.

NEW YORK (AP)—Lleyton Hewitt and James Blake will receive wild cards into the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced its eight men's wild cards Tuesday. Hewitt is a two-time major champion, winning the 2001 U.S. Open, but at age 31 the Australian has fallen to 134th in the world. Blake has twice reached the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, but the 32-year-old American's ranking was also too low to automatically qualify for the year's last Grand Slam, which starts Aug. 27.

Other Americans receiving wild cards were NCAA singles champion Steve Johnson; USTA boys' 18s singles champion Dennis Novikov; 2010 U.S. Open boys' singles finalists Jack Sock and Denis Kudla; and Rajeev Ram, currently ranked No. 100. France's Guillaume Rufin also got a wild card.

Hewitt and Rufin were invited through reciprocal arrangements with the Australian and French Opens.
Ram has a high chance of getting in with his own ranking.
