Default Canada and Cincy in relation to USO success

Similar to GWH's thread about clay masters and RG success.

2011- Djokovic won Canada and USO
2006- Federer won Canada and USO
2004- Federer won Canada and USO
2000- Safin won Canada and USO
1994- Agassi won Canada and USO
1987- Lendl won Canada and USO
1984- Mac won Canada and USO
1975- Orantes won Canada and USO
1972- Nastase won Canada and USO

2007- Federer won Cincy and USO
2005- Federer won Cincy and USO
1988- Wilander won Cincy and USO
1981- Mac won Cincy and USO
1971- Smith won Cincy and USO
1970- Rosewall won Cincy and USO

2003- Roddick won both and USO
1998- Rafter won Canada, Cincy and USO

Since 1968, start of Open Era, 9 times the Canadian Champ won the USO, 6 times the Cincy champ won the USO, and 2 times, Rafter and Roddick won all 3!

Before the Open Era:

1964- Emerson wins Canada and USO
1901- Larned wins Canada and USO
1900- Whitman wins Canada and USO
1899- Whitman wins Canada and USO
1896- Wrenn wins Canada and USO

1953- Trabert wins Cincy and USO
1905- Wright wins Cincy and USO

All in all: 14 times the Canadian champ won the USO, 8 times the Cincy champ won the USO, and 2 times, a player won all 3.

Conclusion: Canada is the best indicator for who will win the USO.

Well, there might be something in it in regular years, but this year Canada doesn't mean shit. Fed, Rafa and Andy out = Djokovic wins Canada = Djokovic wins USO?

Great thread! How often has (a) a winner of both not won the USO or (b) a winner of neither won the USO?

Uhm, if I'm not mistaken, Djokovic still has to play and win 4 more matches to win Canada. And just because 3 if the top 4 are not in the tournament right now, doesn't mean Djokovic will win.

Only Agassi '95, Rafter '98, and Roddick '03 have won the Canada-Cincy double.

So, only Agassi '95 has won both and not won the USO.

For the second one...probably rather often. In fact, three straight years: Fed '08, Delpo '09 and Nadal '10, to begin with.

Also Sampras '02, Hewitt '01, Agassi '99, Rafter '97...we could go on. If my (poor) math is right, the 43 times the USO has been held, 26 times has the men's winner won neither Cincy nor Canada that year.

EDIT: Also Sampras '96, Sampras '95, Sampras '93, Edberg '92, Edberg '91, Sampras '90, Becker '89, Lendl '86, Lendl '85, Connors '83, Connors '82, McEnroe '80, McEnroe '79, Vilas '77, Connors '76, Connors '74, Newcombe '73, Laver '69, Ashe '68.

So as you can see, it's actually pretty damn common to win the USO while winning neither Canada nor Cincy.

Well he is still the overwhelming favorite. And even if someone else wins Canada, it shows even more that this year there is no connection between Toronto and USO. I mean, you don't think someone other than Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray has a chance of winning USO, do you?
