Has Tommy Haas a chance to finish year close to the top 10 ?
I have been wondering about this for a while.
Haas is currently ranked 24 in provisional ranking and no.18 in race. His form since May is outstanding.
Munich 250 : Semifinalist
Roland Garros : 3rd round as a qualifier
Halle : Winner
Hamburg 500 : Finalist
Washington 500 : Finalist
Toronto 1000 : So far 3rd round (possible quarterfinal if he beats Stepanek)
Only one bad performance in Stuttgart (l.in 2nd round to Cervenak) and 1st round loss to Kohlschrieber (eventual Quarterfinalist).
I think if he remains heathy and keeps good form he can do something like Tipsarevic in 2011, but it will be tough for him. As we know he is already 34, but that makes things even more interesting. So what do you think ?

He needs twice as many points in the race as he has now to be 10th. I'd say top 15 would be his ceiling.

Haas to play at WTF for the first time
He is (with Pioline) the best player who has never played there.

Would be awesome. Scud as well, from recent players.

Yep, I forgot him. Also Kevin Curren and Roche (although Masters was a brand new event in Roche case)

That was bad luck. He was 9th in 2001 and 10th in 2002 (in the time of Masters).
He was number 2 in May, 2002.
I would really like to see him in top 10 again. If he will be healthy, he will make it until the end of the year or March, 2013.

Re: Has Tommy Haas a chance to finish year close to the top 10 ?
His current Race ranking leads me to think he could be in the #11-15 range. His ranking will allow him to build momentum at the US Open - wouldn't face a Top 8 player until the second week - so I still can't completely rule out Top 10.

Not only defeat, but the way Haas lost. I have seen the match and I can say his performance was very "interesting" in comparison to next week final showing in Hamburg.
Cervenak had no business in that match, it was only about Tommy and his errors - and I can say too many and too big.

11th-16th, but that may be somewhat optimistic...

Re: Has Tommy Haas a chance to finish year close to the top 10 ?
Top 15-16 would be great, top 20 still very, very good. Even as a big fan I wouldn't have thought he would be capable of another big comeback like this, after again being away from the tour for such a long time in that age. Top 10 should be out of reach though, given the big distance in the race.
If he stays fit, his ranking might peak in spring 2013, after Melbourne/Memphis/Delray Beach/Indian Wells/Miami - including some of his favorite tournaments, without having many points to defend. Maybe there is a slight chance of being in the top 10 then. But looking that far into the future of a 34 year old is probably not very reasonable...

To still be this good at 34, you can only imagine how good he could have been if his prime years hadn't been taken away from him.
