Retired today at the end of first set in third qualy match of Milan challenger due to back pain.
And this coming after a god-like display in previous two matches. His first opponent, whom Fica defeated 0 and 0, had only one game point in entire match (in 9th game). Played wonderfully Q2 match yesterday, forehand - deadly weapon, backhand - synonym for precision. Winner, after winner, after winner, from both sides. What a joy to watch it was!

I hope that he retired today as a precaution. After being so long out of the competition recovering from shoulder injury and surgery and after coming back in style, another injury would be horrible thing to happen. Undoubtedly, staying healthy is, and should always be, imo, top priority.

Luckily it wasn't his shoulder. But it should be serious, as he retired while being competitive in the first set.

I honestly hope it's nothing serious and that his retirement was, as Springer89 said, only a matter of precaution.
It would be nice to have some official statement on this though...

Its wierd. He's had some good comeback wins, but sometimes he does throw in the towel. Against Odesnik at Wimbeldon, he simply gave up once he lost the break in the decider. His body language was simply awful. And he was well on top in the match earlier.

I know the Olympics are the news now but I wonder are there any news on Filip? How is that back injury?

All the players focusing on the Olympics now is the good time to get some good results. Plus the hard courts seems to be Filip-s best surface and if he is fit he could have a series of good results there and get is ranking

I'm usually optimistic, but i'm starting to come to the conclusion that Filip is going to have no chance of fulfilling his potential. Even top 100 looks unlikely. It's impossible to build up any momentum when you're injured 80% of the time, no matter how talented you are.

I know someone on here disagreed, but having spoken to a sports trainer, I'm convinced part of the problem is his management team making him play so many clay court tournaments when he was young. When you play on clay, you have to hit the ball harder to make it go through the court quicker, and this puts more strain on the body. If you're a powerful youngster, it's not going to hurt, but Filip was like a stick when he was 17/18, and didn't have the physique for so many heavy clay court tourneys.

Such a shame.

Have a little faith . Just look at the current rankings: How many players who played less number of tournaments than Filip did are ranked better?
Exactly. As he said in the video below, he's still young, plenty of time ahead of him.

Players got injured. Wheter managed by team from their tennis academy, or by their parent, or by a relative, or a team they hired. I'm not defending his team, just saying that it might be like you wrote but it also might be not be so; I mean, there's a doubt. Furthermore, I'm more convinced that managing according to saying "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" is damaging.

An interview with Filip at RG
(my apologies for English language butchering, corrections are more than welcome )

About his RG R1 match he said that his opponent had played tactically perfect match and returned every ball. About his own game he said that he'd been defensive, that even though he'd served over 200 and at the spot he wanted to, balls were coming back and that match was played fantastically by his opponent. "

He said that he hadn't expected to reach GS MD and that he's ultimately satisfied with his results at this tournament; that he didn't believe he would be able to win against such good players so soon on his come back after being away for more than a year. But, on the other hand, he's never satisfied with himself, same here on this tournament too.

About the injury: That there's a lot of playing he missed, but if it had to happen then better sooner than later, that there's still time, he's still young and that, with his game, he will return to where he should be and have the results people expect him to have. He'll continue to work hard and that even better results will soon follow.

Hey, I have faith . Agree about the rankings - but with a ranking of 400/500, if that's because you're injured 80% of the time, it's irrelevant - you're still ranked at that place. Looking at players above him who played less tournaments only shows one thing - that Filip has potential to be ranked higher (during his French Open run he was probably playing at the level of 100-120), but he won't be if he's unable to build momentum because of his injuries. He's played 6/7 tuornaments for a reason - because he's chronically injured. Until he becomes injury free, he will continue to play 6/7 tournaments a season, and his ranking won't improve.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that I have complete faith in his talent. I watched him live a few times as a junior, and he has a LOT of talent. What I don't have faith in, is his body - he's not managing to stay fit for an extended enough period of time to develop his career. He's missing out on experience of matches and tournaments which can mentally make a player. I'm worried that by the time his body works well enough to play consistently, he'll still have an undeveloped match mentality, and his development as a player will be 2-3 years behind where it should be. And in short careers like tennis, that makes it much more difficult to achieve what you can.

I hope i'm wrong, and it was nice yesterday to see him listed on the qualie entry list for the US open, but there's not a whole stack of players who don't have any kind of breakthrough before they're 21, who go on to have top careers.
