Re: Wawrinka to be Switzerland's flagbearer
Nice gesture from Roger. Giving his good mate some glory.

Those were in fact the only two gold medals they got last time round.
In 2004 the Swiss won only one gold medal, Marcel Fischer won the men's individual epee (fencing). He is retired now.
In 2000, likewise, only one. Birgitte McMahon won triathlon. She has long since retired.
So the normal choice when Federer and Cancellara abstains is Wawrinka.
Switzerland is not really a great Summer Olympic nation, they do better at the Winter Olympics.

Slightly off topic but what happens when a nation doesn't have an olympic medalist ? Who carries the flag then ?

The most accomplished sporstmen or women they have
For example in Colombia they don't have a gold medalist but they got Mariana Pajon who's a BMX world champion
In Spain, Pau Gasol because he's one of our most accomplished sportsmen even if he hasn't won a gold medal at the Olympics.

Re: Wawrinka to be Switzerland's flagbearer
Good news for Stan. It also makes sense for someone else to be flag bearer since Roger's done it twice already.

I'm very happy for Stan and I love Fed, but it's bullshit saying that : Fed doesn't have any power on the Swiss Olympic Committee.

Cancellera had a race next day,
but I don't like the way you make it sound : as always, Wawrinka is not "worthy of honors" in the mind of many people
Anyway, Stan will be very happy with that no matter such stupid comments on internet forums

Because Fed had already done it twice in 2004 and 2008, it was really time for someone else
Fed didn't do that "for Stan" as anyway he has no power on the Olympic Committee's decisions, but he was perfectly right to say that they could give this honor to someone else for once
Besides, Fed having already done it twice, is more concerned about his concentration : he will need it fully in two-setter matches on grass in both singles and doubles, and also being a family-man.
