Re: Formula 1 Style Season in Tennis
I Don't see the big deal, each masters event would be like a grand slam just a smaller field and best of 3 sets for every round bar the final. Look at the global appeal of f1 and the financial success it is. If tennis were to have 15 events of equal statue in different countries it would be great. The ITF and grand slam committee are never going to extend the number of slams so it's down to the ATP to do something. At the moment the tour is a mess, other than the grand slams.the masters play a poor second fiddle, no one gives a shot about the Davis cup and the players are too fatigued tO compete at their full potential at end of year masters cup

Re: Formula 1 Style Season in Tennis
Why so hard on him? It is just idea, not proposal I guess. If tennis started with this, it would be normal for everybody. Then he would write about GS, ATP500 and you would be freaking out about that crazy idea again. Anyway, I am pretty happy with system we have, would not change it for this football system.

Re: Formula 1 Style Season in Tennis
The problem with this is that the gap between the top 4 and the rest would get even larger. The lower ranked players would have no chance of making a living.

Re: Formula 1 Style Season in Tennis
Though I think getting rid of the slams is impossible (and not something we would want either!) the point is true that among most of the "average" tennis public, there is very little awareness of tennis that goes on beyond the slams. The slams mean SO much more than Masters etc. that they're almost like different sports at times. Commentators at Wimbledon talk about Nadal winning Rome and Monte Carlo and then have to explain "these are important tournaments".
Compare that to F1 - it has equal coverage for every race and people are engaged throughout the year - each country/stop feels equally invested.
Not sure how things could be changed so that the ATP events had more prominence generally, than the anomalies that are the 8 weeks of slams, but one thing that could be tried is having more of a focus on the Race. F1 is all about the individual and team rankings after every race - the tennis race is hardly mentioned, even by the commentators. Maybe making the YE Masters more of a focal point, be that through marketing, through bonus points for certain events? (I don't know - best results over American HCs? best clay results?) - anything to make each "season" seem more unique and like it has a thread to it... At the moment the different levels are always competing with each other and it's a product that's not as easy to sell as clearly defined "table" based football (soccer); F1 etc.

Re: Formula 1 Style Season in Tennis
It is hard for F1 systems to implement in Tennis.
Each tournament is not equal (Grand Slam, Masters 1000, 500, 250, Olympics, Davis Cup, Year-end Tournment).
Tennis is playing on elimination, F1, like Field and Track, playing on times or length records.

Every tournament isn't equal in tennis unlike F1 .This won't work and would ruin all the history of this great sport
