The key for Roger is winning today's final. If he does it's difficult to see how Djokovic could hit back until Federer has to start defending his indoor titles.

yes but the funny side is that if Fed wins today and if Djokovic does the same result as Fed in the Olympics, and assuming it's at least a quarterfinal, Djokovic would take the number 1 back ... at least for one week

... because Fed would replace a 90 points result, Djokovic not, and Fed would only be 75 points ahead.

Next months have the potential for a succession of changing number 1s anyway.

Can someone clarify for me - shouldn't Federer automatically overtake Sampras' record of 286 weeks? Or does Federer lose points after the end of this week? Surely he has at least 287 weeks locked in?

I think Federer needs to keep a good US HC season (which he can do it for sure) to ensure a top seeding into USO

It's not gonna be automatic, but he will surpass the record next Monday, since Nole is not playing anywhere the next week.

Both Federer and Djokovic are not losing any point for 4 weeks.

1) What 90 points does Fed have to make up?

2) in terms of draws, it doesn't really matter if Nole takes #1 back before USO, assuming Fed stays second, right? Since placement of the 3 and 4 seeds are random, the difference between #1 and #2 for seeding is solely about prestige

3) what are some scenarios for Nadal breaking back into the top two by the USO?

Any tournament Federer gets to count into his rankings must be larger than 90 points to enter, because this is his current minimum counting tournament. So, he must make more than 90 points for him to actually gain points.

I'll let the rest for others to answer you.

Default Re: Unofficial Live ATP Rankings

Federer will at least be number 1 until the end of the Olympics, which means 4 more weeks, which means at least 289 weeks, that is more than Sampras's 286 weeks.

Djokovic can take the number 1 back after the Olympics : actually he will even take it if he just does the same result as Fed in the Olympics, if it's at least a quarterfinal (because Fed will replace his 90 points from Doha whereas for Djokovic it will be a completely new result).

BUT after the Olympics, Djokovic will lose many points ... and as you will see below, there's a very big chance that Fed is number 1 during the US Open and until Basel-Bercy (the points from Bercy and last WTF being taken out at that moment)... and that he reaches more than 300 weeks at number 1.

Now as far as the rankings are concerned, what will be important will be the Race for the end-of-year number 1, which would also mean for Fed potentially equalize Sampras's 6 end-of-year number 1s.

At the moment for the end-of-year number 1 Fed, Djokovic and Nadal are nearly equal :
Federer 7085 ahead of Djokovic and Nadal 6840,

which means the best from now on (and especially the winner of the US Open and/or the WTF ) will be number 1 in the end of the year.

Before that, here are the ranking points until Shanghai when you take off the points from last year :

after Wimbledon :
Federer 11075
Djokovic 11000
Nadal 8905

after Canada open (won by Djokovic last year then he would drop 1000 points) :
Federer 10985
Djokovic 10000
Nadal 8895

after Cinci for the US Open seeds (Djokovic was finalist and will lose 600 points) :
Federer 10805
Djokovic 9400
Nadal 8715

after the US Open (Djokovic will have 2685 points to take back to Fed until then !!) :
Federer 10085
Nadal 7515
Djokovic 7400

after Shanghai :
Federer 10085
Djokovic 7400
Nadal 6995

1) has already been answered

2) right

3) Nadal needs to get 700 points more than Djokovic by the US Open (that is during Olympics+Canada+Cinci) to get the number 2 seed for the US Open

Updated with the results from July 8th.

Gonna do another update when the official rankings are out and are stable (right now, some of the players don't have their updated profiles yet). Any differences will be repaired.

official rankings are out.
i noticed that the column "week change" is 0 for every player. seems to have something to do with the not-yet-updated player profiles as slasher mentioned above me.

No, the 0 week change error they have has to do with the fact that they added a blank 02.07.2012 rankings week. They never added this before on a post-Grand Slam, IW, Miami Masters Monday.
