Federer is now certain to be ahead of Sampras for the number of weeks in the top-2 : he's certain to be in the top-2 until after the Canada open at least, which means at least 382 weeks.

Sampras stopped at 376 weeks.

Lendl can be considered quite around the same number although it's not easy to estimate as the rankings were not updated weekly in that time : at most 403 I had estimated in the past.

Nadal is already at 343 weeks

Of course, if Fed wins Wimbledon, he will overtake Sampras for the number of weeks at number 1 and be a number 1 at 31 years old, which seldom happened ... and win one more slam

Now with 32 slam semifinals he holds this record alone, not together with Connors.

Hi Duong thanks for the great info. I am wondering if it's possible to figure out if Connors had estimated weeks in top 2 more or less than RF? Possibly could have been more? or is it "unknowable" ?

In those days they didn't have weekly rankings.

I don't know how they determined the dates for a new ranking, but I guess Connors has more time in the top2

. If Federer gets another year Federer will have more it I think...

RF is one step closer to reaching Lendl's record of most slams "won or lost to eventual champ"

Lendl = 8 won + 23 lost to eventual champ = 31 (this achievement still boggles my mind!)
Federer = 16 + 12 + 1 wimbledon 2012 = 29
Nadal = 10 + 6 = 16

so happy that now we can strike the #1 weeks record off this list.... personally... of all the records that federer had yet to achieve... the most weeks at #1 is right at the TOP of my personal list of "the records that federer might achieve but has yet to" ... and in this list i also feel that it's also one of the biggest (calendar/non-calendar slam would probably be the biggest)...

now that we are done with that... what is the next record you would MOST like to see federer achieve...?? personally... i'd like him to:
1) get the olympic gold and complete career golden slam...
2) tie the most years ending in #1 record...
3) calendar or non-calendar slam...

i think right now.. this year federer has a pretty decent chance of achieving (1) and (2) ... and (3) would be the biggest record that federer has yet achieved --- but is also something which unfortunately i doubt even he could achieve at his age.... but there is no finish line... as long as federer still remains healthy and in top form... we can always dream....

Yet to come my personal favorite would be the as-yet-unacheived "career double slam." It means, 2 or more at every slam. would that be crazy or what? One more Rolland Garros and he's done. (Laver did it but only half of those were in Open era, and back then the slams were not played on as many different surfaces.) OK I did not say it would be easy!

That are the most important things he can achieve. Will be very hard, but after yesterday anything is possible

Obviously, winning a 6th US Open title - which would give him the Open Era record - is much more important to me then tying most years ending as the world no. 1 or taking that more marginal event at the Olympic Games. However, if he wins the US Open then surely that sixth year-ending number 1 year will follow accordingly. He can extend his WTF record to 7 while he's at it and then win an 8th Wimbledon.

I'd like Federer to become the all time leader for singles major titles out of men and women, despite them being different realms. I'm almost certain he won't achieve this. He needs to ride this wave of confidence and form as it might be his last lengthy stint of near peak play. Playing like he has done over the last months, he can certainly win 2 or so more majors over the next 5 or so events.

Oh, and a 2nd RG title, please. That's actually the one I want the most.

A realistic list, then:

1. Second RG title
2. Eighth Wimbledon title
3. Sixth US Open title
4. Years as no.1, YEC record extensions, sole record at AO etc etc etc etc.

Unrealistic wishes:

- CYGS
- NCYGS
- 25 or more Majors
- 10 Wimbledon titles
- 3 titles minimum at every Major

I can't really think of anything specific left now. Would be nice to finish year as #1, but total weeks is more important and he's got that. Would be nice to win Olympics gold, but he's got it in doubles. Would be nice to be sole record holder at any of AO/Wimby/USO, but sharing is fine.
