Add me to the party too -- love the one-handed backhand. I enjoy watching these four guys play anyway, so I'm really happy to see them all make it to the semis.

This is really cool. Savor the moment, because it'll probably be a long time before we see it again.

Don't live in the past. Embrace the present. Go double-handed.

Tsonga can hit a one hander and does so a few times, namely on passing shots

One-handed has always been better than two on genuinely quick surfaces for a lot of reasons.

It didn't used to be a massive disadvantage on clay, because players used to produce a lot less topspin than they do now. Muster (and even Guga) were hitting balls that bounced a lot lower than the ones players face at RG these days.

The last time this happened at an ATP tournament was at Viña del Mar in 2009, when the semi-finalists were González, Acasuso, Cuevas and Robredo.

It's nice to see this happening again. I do have a preference for the one handed backhand (I have one myself). I much preferred it when there was more of a balanced mix of one handers and two handers on the tour, then the current two-handed backhand dominated tour. More variety always equalled more fun and enjoyment for me.

However as we know adopting the one handed backhand is far riskier, as there is a lot of pressure on many juniors to achieve good results at an early stage, and the one hander can be a disadvantage on the return of serve and with dealing with high balls. Plus the one hander places greater demands on having effective footwork and movement.

Generally IMO a beautiful one hander like those of Edberg, Gaudio, Stich, Pavel etc, is more aesthetically pleasing and even nicer to watch than a beautiful two hander like those of Ríos, Nalbandian, Arazi, Kafelnikov etc.

Well said except Arazi was a single hander.

Very good post. It´s almost impossible to say objectively which one is better, one-hander or two-hander, but I prefer the one-hander, pretty much due to the reasons listed here. I have one myself, and it´s such a beautiful shot.

The single handed backhand is an extremely tough shot to learn when you're just starting unless you have a strong wrist. It's no wonder a lot of juniors give up on it and most coaches don't even try.

My bad I meant to include Arazi in that list of one handers and put Kucera in the list of two handers. A pretty bad typo there .

I was a pretty big fanboy of the three Moroccan legends.

Yes there is nothing wrong with two hander and it has its place on the tour of course. If the vast majority of the tour had one handers I would also be wishing more of a balance between one handers and two handers as well. A one hander executed properly is beautiful to watch, and ripping winners with a one hander is such a great feeling.

Yes many coaches and juniors don't really have the patience to teach/learn the technique, positioning and footwork patterns required, and risk getting poor results for a while before the aspiring player becomes more comfortable with it.

That is understandable of course because players are under so much pressure to win matches and gain sponsorship money as early as they can to make a decent living in a cut-throat individual sport.

For me personally the one hander just feels more natural. If I tried to play with a two hander I would probably hit 80% of shots into the fence.
