Down a break in the third now, it seems he's lost his form from earlier this clay season. Wish I could see what was going on.

I woke up and he's down 2-4 in the 3rd, and then he won 4 games to win the match. Well done.
But I think we shouldn't have high hope for the next match, he never beat Ferrer on clay before and I don't think he can do it tomorrow, especially after a 2.5hr match today, and he already said he has no energy yesterday.

I don't know what's going on with him, but if I'm him, I'll check with a doctor. I mean, his performances lately since MC, and what he said after matches, there's a recurring theme, tired, no energy, fatique... I'm getting worry for him.

Oh, so he was down 0-4 and won 6 games? wow, bravo. He broke the last GGL serve from 0-40 down.

Agree with this, but at least he's had a much better claycourt season than last year and picked up a lot of points. I don't think he should play in Nice, it's not worth it. He needs to be physically ready for Paris.

Well, I guess the bright side is, his body is tired, his mind is not. I mean, we've seen him mentally drained end of last year, when he's horrendous and losing matches in bagel. At least now he's fighting no matter how behind he is. That will catch up to him some time, but not now.

I so hope he get out of Nice, or at least tank the first match or sth, not sure if he'll do that though, it being Nice his hometown. But the folks there will understand he needs some rest before RG.

But as Mike said, he's done well on clay this year. I always see the clay season as an X-factor for him. He's performance on HC is more reliable and consistent. He can count on getting a certain amount of points on that surface. But if he does well on clay, those are the one that will move him up the ranking. The most important tournament on clay is still coming. Expectation is high this year, he needs to be well prepared both physically and mentally. Anyway, we'll see what happens. And as for tomorrow, I still hope for the best despite not expecting him to win. Allez Gilles.

Nope, he beated Ferrer at Cincy R3 7-5 in the third. It was Youzhny who he beated in Hamburg SF.

Anyways, Allez for Gilles vs Ferrer, hope he gives everything he has!

Hats off to you Mike S. for suffering through the old scoreboard torture test.

I just wasn't up for watching the scoreboard this morning (too stressful ) so I went on a blackout until I thought the match would be over and was literally shaking as I clicked on the mouse to reveal the scores of the day only to see that Gilles was able to beat Lopez yet again. And to find out how he did it just makes me that much more proud of him.

I wouldn't read too much into the whole lack of energy thing. That's just Gilles being his humble and honest self and more the result, I think, of his recent string of success more than a possible underlying ailment of some kind. After all, when you're playing well and winning a lot, you're naturally playing a lot more tennis as a result of that success going farther in tournaments more regularly. Also, Gilles has said that the reason why he is playing so much better now is because he is finally pain free in his knee and back and knows he can go as long as it takes. So if anything, he's healthier than ever.

Again, I am so proud of him when he pulls out wins like this instead of just going a way like so many others would, including a few of his fellow countrymen. It's the truest sign of someone with the heart of a champion. To never give up. It makes me wish that I actually could've seen this match that much more. I bet his winning reaction and yell on match point was intense and awesomely rewarding too!

I know Ferrer will be a tough match up for him, but he is definitely in it with a chance and the one thing that does trouble him, being overpowered, won't be a problem with Ferrer since he has neither a big serve or powerful groundstrokes. This will be a match up of a grinder vs a counterpuncher. In fact, I think Gilles has more pop on his groundies and serve than Ferrer does. We'll see. Good luck Gilles!

not sure what you mean, but I like it all the same.
I won't really describe Gilles as humble, but he doesn't brag and he has good perspective of things, that could be counted as characters of a humble person.

Anyway, this is on the paper:

I also found an article that actually describe the match:

Oh I would. I would absolutely describe Gilles as humble. Like you said. He doesn't brag or boast about his abilities.

What I meant when I said that is, Gilles always seems to be downplaying his wins and accomplishments and says I was tired or I got a little bit lucky when sometimes he really just outplayed the other guy either totally or when it mattered most in certain situations but he rarely ever says that. He's too humble to. Nadal is like that too and he's not even a favorite of mine. You would never catch say Tsonga passing up the opportunity to let everybody know how great he is or how great he played. Or at least how great he "thinks" he is. No offense to Tsonga fans, but what the hay, this is the Gilles Simon thread right.
