Same for Fed - he could have won US Open 09 and maybe even 10 - he was very close. He'd have had 7 in a row there.

The reason the 8 is so impressive is precisely because he's not had one bad day - and to me it's tougher in a best of 3 in some ways as it's easier to be upset by a hot opponent. If you're as great as Sampras was at Wimby or Nadal at RG then it's more of an achievement to beat you there than in a best of 3 event on grass/clay - the fact that Nadal hasn't lost 2 sets in a match at MC over 8 years is astounding. He's not even been close to losing. Been taken to a deciding set 4 times and won that 6-1 three times I think. The closest was Gasquet in 2005 (6-3/6-4 in the final set I think....).

It's a perfect match of man and surface. Since 2007 he's lost 2 sets - one to Djokovic, another to Murray.

It's not about saying that 5 Wimbledons or 5 US Opens in a row aren't impressive - they are. But winning 8 in a row of anything, in any sport is nigh on impossible.
That's a well reasoned argument right there

Speaking of other potentials...Raonic has been dominant in San Jose over the last couple of years. If he doesn't ditch it for the more prestigious tournaments in Europe as he becomes a top player, I think he could conceivably win 6 more there to tie Rafa's current record. Obviously San Jose is worse than a MM tournament, and even an 8 title streak over there may barely get a mention in the records books

Clearly why Rafa's got the ATP to end that tournament next year.

Oh shit! In an effort to protect Rafa's legacy I see Uncle Toni has conspired to have the San Jose event eliminated from the calendar...http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=200570

There goes the last chance of anyone ever getting close to Rafa's 8 consecutive titles record

Yeah just saw that, Rafa must feel really intimidated by young Milos

This is an incredible record and like Fed's slam semis record is one which is unlikely to be repeated soon, or ever. 8 years without a hiccup. For me this and the 81 wins on clay are Nadal's most outrageous records. Something about that court just totally works for him.

that is really mind numbing stuff if you think about it. average touring pro cant even get into the draw here and he has 8 titles there.

and if he can improve a little and also get a little more fit for next year, i dont see why a 9th title would be in question.

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...
