I also know people who have grown up their whole lives in Montreal and can't speak a word of French!
That is why I said it's not a must to know French to live in Montreal. Most of the Anglo-Canadians I know don't speak French but they understand the language. And I don't expect a 10 years old speaking a second language fluently if you does not practise at real coversation unless you attended French immersion school.

No they don't. Born and raised in Canada and even lived in Montreal for two years and I can confirm that the vast majority do not understand the language.

All that is in the OP and Swiss German is not an official language.

At Harvard, I'm sure Blake took a foreign language.

Americans not being able to speak other languages has always been one of my pet peeves.
John Isner now.
Judging from experience, you don't need to be all that good at a language to graduate college, though.

Anyway, when I found out Safin spoke Spanish in addition to Russian (my two favorite languages other than my native tongue), my interest in him definitely grew exponentially...

I knew that Nalbandian spoke Spanish and English , but was surprised to hear him speak Italian . Makes sense tho since his mother has Italian heritage.
