Rogie has always had a stubborn/arrogant attitude about his backhand. Its like he doesn't recognise it at a weakness and forgets he has a slice. There are far too many occasions when he goes for it when the better shot selection would have been a slice. Prime example was against Del Potro - it basically cost him a slam there. Going from slicing to ball bashing the backhand there was literally the worst tactical change he could have made and he did it.

I have to question the credibility of this story. I don't know the mentalities of these champions but can you picture Federer, Nadal and Djokovic – or any past champion for that matter – thinking "I'm not going to win this point"? Points come and go really fast so can anyone – not just think "I'm gonna lose this point" but actually purposely hit a ball out of bounds so they lose the point? It seems to be a loser's mentality and Sampras was far from a loser. How many times have these champions been down games and sets – I have a hard time picturing them tanking points just to prevent their opponents from gaining confidence.

When I watched Sampras I always got the feeling he wasn't playing his "A" game at times during return games, especially after he was up a break. Looked like he was going through the motions and just having a carefree swing at the ball. My rationale was that he was so supremely confident in his serve that it would extremely unlikely he was broken back or that he would be able to take out the breaker.

That mentality against Agassi doesn't surprise me at all really.

If Fed started hitting his backhand more flat he'd shank less but hit more into the net.

Djokovic is widely regarded as having much more topspin on his backhand than Murray, right?

And his forehand is hit with western grip, heavy topspin...
