Re: Is golf a sport?
Of course it is.
Any regulated game that requires physical ability is a sport.
Hence golf, darts and snooker are sports, while chess or poker aren't (no physical ability required). Bullfighting is the opposite case, it requires physical ability but it isn't regulated. Games like Jenga are usually not sufficiently regulated to be considered sports, and most of them self-define as games, but I don't see why they couldn't qualify.

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.
The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

ESPN is ''Entertainment and Sports Programming Network''
There is American Football on ESPN. You may as well ask how in the world can American Football be considered an entertainment?

In order to win the WSOP main event you have to play 8 days in a row for some 14 hours a day. Surely marathonians look pale in comparison.

Re: Is golf a sport?
Poker played at a high level is more demanding than most sports.

So if somebody held a tournament for computer-game players, that would be a sport? (Physical ability is required - dexterity, reflexes, etc.)

I meant locomotive physical ability, I should have specified.

Yes. And no, computer games don't. Needless to say, you can draw your line above mine and say darts don't demand enough locomotive physical ability.

Re: Is golf a sport?
It's as much of a "sport" as pro wrestling.

Because these were military disciplines in ancient times that usually were accomplished by the best physical specimins. It took a lot of athleticism to throw a discus or javelin properly, as well to shoot a bow and arrow in combat. Nowadays, they are less exciting, but this is why they are part of the Olympic games.

Re: Is golf a sport?
Golf is a sport but golfers aren't necessarily athletes.

Re: Is golf a sport?
I am a big poker fan, and play a lot, and I cansay that it would be mentally impossible for me to win wsop, because of how demanding it is, yes. I can barely keep mentally in play for more than 4, 5 hours in a row once a week. Let alone 12 hours a day for 8 days in a row. But it also doesnt have much more of a sport than that.
But golf has everything, its probably the most demanding sports of all, not physically, but the other aspects cover this, by far. Anyone who has played golf at high level knows what i am talking about. Toughest sport to be good at
