Anybody know why Duckie did not front for his match against Gonzalez?
Gonzalez played a LL instead.

Duckworth has one of the most extreme service grip I've ever seen. Much more of a backhand grip than a continental. The grip is great for topspin (and Duckworth has a nice kick serve), but not so good for pace.

This is about to be a first serve.

His second serve on the backhand side is so good. Pushes the player out wide so much. He should still get a WC.

“It’s been an amazing year for James, he’s performed consistently the whole way through and improved his ranking by 400 spots down to 260 last month,” said Duckworth’s coach Brent Larkham, Head Coach of the AIS Pro Tour program.

“He’s capped off his year with some great results in the play-off and played well against top opponents.

“I’d really like to pay tribute to James’ professionalism, which for a young man just starting out on the Pro Tour is exceptional. He’s really leading the way for all the junior players in Australia and it’s great to see him setting such a good example.

“His attention to detail in everything he does, his preparation and planning, he always gives himself the best opportunity to perform.

Duckworth, along with other members of the AIS Pro Tour program, is in a final training block before the summer of tennis starts in earnest. His plans include playing qualifying in Brisbane and Sydney.

I love his attitude and hope he can get some confidence boosting wins in Brisbane or Sydney qualifiers.

Good luck to James. He has beaten a lot of fine players to this wc and I am sure he will make the most of it! Good luck.

Wow, when you look at it from that picture it does look very extreme. Perhaps he was trying to slice the first serve but even then it shouldn't be that far. When you watch him play he doesn't hit the ball that hard so taking away potential speed from his serve feels like a disadvantage to me. On the flip side these things are very good on a clay court so that could explain his success but you really have to be able to switch your play when you step on to a hard court or even a grass court for that matter.

I'm sure he will eventually learn to play differently on different surfaces but I can't help but think this is just habit from the clay tournaments he played this year.

James plays Mahut in first round of Brisbane. Should be a good match.

Cheers for that. Hopefully he can adapt. Mahut isn't a very good returner so James' serve might hold up alright tomorrow regardless.
