Re: Technique vs. Technology
I think the top players now are fitter, faster and have further perfected the techniques they use.
In every other sport where there are time or distance records we can see that on average the results improve in time. The training and conditioning just evolves (sort of survival of the fittest )

Re: Technique vs. Technology
Technique and technology are beginning to go hand in hand. Players are having to develop their techniques to suit the advancing racquet technology. Players like Nadal adapted their technique into a mould that wouldn't have been possible in years gone, but works wonders due to how things are currently. There's no luck there.. pretty smart thinking really.
In laments terms, technique is and will always be the crucial aspect, however greatly technology advances the sport. Much like how natural animal instinct will never be overtaken by the evolution of technology. Rawr.

Why is it sad? Technology evolves and as such techniques must be changed to adapt. If a modern Formula 1 driver was so enamoured with the 1959 Alfa Romeo 159, so much so that he drives his 2008 Ferrari the same way, he's not going to get good results. Same with tennis.

Re: Technique vs. Technology
Just read an interesting article claiming that the biggest change in modern tennis has been in the bio-mechanics of players.
