Attempted Translation:

"I did not want to end my career this way. That's the reason why i decided to have an operation. I wanted to regain control of this decision, and that it wouldn't be my body forcing me to stop.

This time, physically, all is well. Only i'm taking more time to recover from the efforts expended during matches. I haven't played for 2 months, so my body is stiff all over.

This is my thirteenth season on the circuit, and i love this sport. I can't see myself doing anything else at this moment in time. I want to play 2 or 3 more years. At first, i wanted to play in all the tournaments. But right now, i like choosing those that i feel like playing. My goal is really just to have much more fun on court. I feel i have nothing left to prove to anyone.

I came here to get as many matches as possible. This target has now been raised. I will now do everything i can to win this tournament."

Merci, Fisico!

His remarks about retiring in Valencia this year was completely hypothetical in my understanding, that he would have to do so ONLY IF his fitness level didn't improve.
Now he's fit again and has won a tournament, I think the retirement talk is out of picture!

Still it's reassuring to hear in his own words that he is motivated to continue for 2 or 3 more years.
The only concern is that he is still scheduled to play two more tournaments in a row, Hamburg and Umag. I remember his knee pain worsened during his three-week run in Costa do Saoipe, Buenos Aires and Acapulco last year. But he seems to be aware of the danger of play too many tournaments, so I hope he'll take it easy and won't push himself too hard.

Btw, his ranking has recovered from #85 to #64. He will have to defend 250 points in Umag, so it's great he's already earned as many points!

Congratulations, Juanqui! What a great improvement in your ranking. Of course, it isn't the numbers that are most important. What is important is that you're healthy-and winning! I hope to see a lot more of Juan Carlos.

I love how we thought he might end his career on 11 titles (after the big dry spell following Madrid 2003). Well, he's won another 5 in the last few years and it's all the more impressive after the injury problems.

His love for the game is so immense, I think it says a lot that he doesn't want to retire on a bad note and he's persevered. I think he can still achieve a lot in tennis.

Juanqui was the biggest jumper in the rankings, moving up 21 places from 85 to 64! Way to go Juan Carlos! You performed in regal style in Stuttgart!
