I know this isn't a 'Is Roger the GOAT?' thread but since we're on the topic of records/achievements etc I'm just saying this has to be the toughest task in the modern era and Roger hasn't been able to do it. Speaking for myself, Roger will become the GOAT only if he makes a Calendar Slam. I know Rod Laver had only 10-11 slam titles but the magnitude of completing the calendar slam is such that it overshadows everything else. (olympics, career slam etc, and yes even 16 grand slam titles)
But during Rod Laver's time, 3 slams were played on grass. So, for me, it's not much of a big deal.

I have more respect for Agassi, Federer and Nadal who all won the Career Slams in different surfaces.

If Federer wins today, then he will equal Nadal's record of 18 Masters 1000 tournament titles. In the process, he would also equal Sampras' 64 career titles.

I should also add that regardless of the outcome today, this will be the third occasion on which he has made 4 consecutive Masters 1000 finals in a single calendar year (having previously also done so in 2006 and 2007). Nobody else has accomplished this feat, although Nadal was in the final for 3 consecutive Masters tournaments in 4 separate years (2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010).

Quality stuff. The masters record will almost certainly go to Nadal for the foreseeable future. The 64 is a big feat.
Great consistency as ever regarding the consecutive finals.

Just read through this again, awesome stuff. And now a new title to add on

I feel embarrassed to ask this, but does an indoor hardcourt event (ie. stockholm) count as a hardcourt title? or do they only class outdoor hardcourts in that category.

Thanks
Yes, title #64 is a great achievement! He is now joint 4th in the all-time title race. But in terms of this thread, perhaps what is more important is that he is reaching closer to the open era record for outdoor tournament wins and hard court tournament wins.

In answer to your question, indoor hardcourt does count as a hardcourt title. The only occasions on which indoor tournaments don't count towards the hardcourt tally were the occasions on which he won on carpet (twice). The ATP don't hold any tournaments on the carpet surface now though, so indoor titles do add to the hardcourt count.

Interestingly, Federer had most of his very early success indoors. In fact the first 5 finals that he reached were all indoors! Also for those who are interested, Stockholm 2010 is his 14th indoor title.
