Forget the names Nadal and Fed, just look at the numbers. There were great things in both seasons and so I isolate the seasons, I don't consider who needs which slam or how many times in a row a slam is won. Just the results from the year.

If you want to add importance as far as what is needed then you can if you want, but ten years from now it won't matter much.
I think there's more to it than straight numbers (which hardly favor Fed anyway), but we'll agree to disagree

Well, not necessarily...

The difference is, once we start considering other years together, we're really just starting to look at an entire career. Fed won the French in 2009, so he wouldn't have had a NEED for it in 2010. The surface trifecta is still impressive, but I don't think it inherently trumps the things Fed accomplished in 2006.

I'm actually not really arguing for Nadal's 2010 as being technically superior. I'm just saying that if I could play top level tennis, and could have my results match any year since 1969, I would want that surface trifecta for ME. I wouldn't care if anyone else valued it or not. If, in a single year, I could be the French, Wimbledon, and USO champion, that would give ME a higher level of satisfaction than the other choices. I'm sure it's not what everyone would choose, but I also believe I'm not the only one who would choose it.

In reality, I'm sure most players would give anything to have Fed or Nadal's WORST year!

Cheers!
Dave

Edit: By the way, Borg was asked whether he would trade one of his Wimbledons for a U.S. Open title. Guess what his response was?
Sorry, but if I haven't been able to articulate my point well enough by now, I'm probably not going to be able to do it all...

Regarding Borg, though, he could have "traded" for Fed's 2006 without giving up his Wimbledon title.

By the way, I hope it's obvious that I wouldn't expect any player to want to actually trade for something someone else has accomplished. Not only is there no tennis genie that can grant that wish, but it wouldn't mean anything if you didn't actually have to do the work. It's really more like "if your own efforts could have produced any result, what would you have wanted those results to be"? But in this case, for the sake of argument, limiting the possibilities to mirror a result actually produced by a tour player during a certain timeframe.

I don't think Borg is lying for one second when he said he wouldn't trade. I also don't think for one second that he wouldn't love to have a USO title. Borg is one of my all-time favorites, by the way. I personally put him in my top echelon of all-time greats, but I digress...

Even were you to ask such a question in that manner to Borg, I'm still fairly certain he would rather win Wimbledon -- that was his dream coming up and the biggest tournament of the year for him. My point was, this fascination with winning on three surfaces is largely fan-driven, not player. Yes, once you're career is over it's nice to have a career slam and show that you have variety in your game -- however I don't know of any player that sets this as a goal, certainly not to do it within one year. Players want to be number 1, and win slams. Everything else is icing.

Federers Season and its not even close. In each GS that Fed played he played opponents that were playing at their peaks whilst Nadal did not. Rgers tennis at the AO was tennis that Nadal could only dream of playing, the matches vs Robredo,Gonzo,Roddick were all astounding, each of these opponenets the way they played in 07, would have atleast taken this grinding Nadal that we see today to 5. Roger did something that Rafa just cant do and thats play magical tennis. Esp in the roddick and Robredo matches, the angles and VOLLEYS that Roger made were just superb.

The Djokovic that Roger payed in 2007(AO) was better imo than the 2010 version. He was hungrier, more competitite and was not used to being a loser yet. Roger demolished him in 3, and put on a tennis clinic. Has Rafa put on any Tennos clinics? No he has not.

This is one of the many reasons why Rogers season was that much better than Rafas

I would say federer because he accomplished it without help from his coach or the option of help from his coach during a match.
Secondly he made the GS finals in all 4 slams.
3- the true Nadull destroyer was injuryed & out of action for the 3 slams in question, he might have won but it begs the question.

Federer beat Nadal easily on his surfaces both times when they were healthy. Roger didnt get an easy draw in his fave slam either, like Nadal did for the French.

I would say Federer's 2007 season is better, by the way, not all the nadal fans are loud, for sure you post/speak much louder than me
