UPDATED after Rome
After a horrid start to the clay season, Roger finally found some of his form and recorded good wins over the likes of Gulbis, Wawrinka and Ferrer, before succombing to old foe Rafa Nadal in the final. By reaching the final Roger scored some much needed ranking points, although the total for his overall ranking was negative as he was the defending champion. Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

*UPDATED AFTER STUTTGART*

Where does that leave Roger in the fight to keep the #1 ranking?
Well, here are the stats for 2007 alone:

Rogers total for 2007: 3955 points
Nadals total for 2007: 4680 points

Which puts Nadal ahead by 725 points. Up now: The hardcourt season, where Roger will try to defend his many points from last year and Nadal will likely improve from last years poor results. The race for #1 this year is the closest since 2003.

:wavey:
Great work BlueSwan:cool:

Just as well FED won Wimby~~ if RAFA had won Wimby then the chase for #1 would almost be a sure bet for the Spaniard;)

Yeah 2007 is proving to be a very exciting year, & looks like USO will answer quite a few questions... If FED wins then he`ll be the undisputed #1 whether or not the rankings reveal so [it would be quite unthinkable winning 3-Slams without finishing #1]..

Of course if Rafa wins USO then FED`s in for the fight of his life~~~ he`d need to finish 07 even stronger than he finished 08..

FED`s a little fortunate that TMC is played on such a fast indoor surface:devil:
Looks like #1 may actually come down to TMC this time..

Nadal's current point total of 5455 is higher than most other year-end number ones (including sampras). If he does better than last season from here on (which is not very hard to imagine) it will be a close race for the number one ranking with Roger.

omg im so nervious.... this is the first time in like 3 years or since ive started watching tennis that Roger is in peril of losing #1 status.
ROGER ALL THE WAY THOUGH!

ill be right there in rogers cup montreal hehhe... i live there! yay whos going??? wheres the usual roger band?

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

At least he has almost no points to defend in Cincy and if he does win Montreal, he won't play till Wednesday. Last year he played on Tuesday night and then had to play the following afternoon. That really screwed him up.

Come on Fed!!!! we need an extended grass season though....that would have also closed the gap some more :)

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

Exactly, a good day! If he wins the tournament offcourse. Nadal will only gain 150 points on Roger!! That is oke!

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

Am I right in thinking Nadal would be ahead by something close to 450 points for this year if Federer got the W today?

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

Still not exactly brilliant for Roger :(

But he must feel confident that he can outperform Rafa again in Cincy, now he has a BYE fatigue shouldn't be an issue this year.

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

If he can win Cincy he will be in good shape. If Nadal outperforms him here then things will be pretty difficult for Federer.

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

Nadal gives up in the second round. If Roger plays a good tournament, this could be GREAT to keep his #1 ranking.

Re: Federer vs Nadal ranking points (First post always updated)

Nadal losing today is a great chance for him to move up in the race and to gain some points in the rankings that would take off pressure off him having to defend the Open....
