Simone won the Florianopolis title without losing a set, for his 7th career challenger title. He's approaching 100 clay court challenger wins and tied his finals record at 7-7 in finals. He rose twenty-five spots in the official rankings and provisionally ranked #106. This is the highest he's been ranked since exactly one year ago when he was #97 in the rankings. Simone only defends 16 points until the French Open cutoff, so he's essentially one good result away from clinching a spot in the RG MD, which is important as he is defending 61 points there.
Things are starting to come together, but unfortunately he lost 4-6 0-6 to Eduardo Schwank in Santiago challenger R1. Let's chalk this down as a tank, and hope we don't see more of this to come. His next scheduled events are the Dallas challenger next week and Miami qualifying. Hopefully he can win some matches on hard court before the tour turns full-time to clay.
Simone lost in R1 to Cilic at Dallas 5-7 3-6. Not a good performance, so hopefully he will play better in Miami qualies. He'll be seeded high so he should have a good draw and a good opportunity to qualify.
Simone won his first round qualifying match over Amer Delic 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3, after being down 4-6 2-5! On one hand, it's not good he's falling behind and struggling so much in a first round qualifying match against a player he's superior to. But what's most important is he fought back and he won when he could have easily given up and gone to his next event. Hopefully this is another sign that Simone has the desire and fight in his tennis again.
He plays Florent Serra for a place in the MD, and will have a good chance at a LL position even if he were to lose. A win would put Simone up to #106 in the ranking, and 2 MD victories would likely give Simone a top 100 ranking again. But let's not look too far ahead........hopefully he can win his way into the MD of Miami!
Simone won his qualifying match over Serra 7-6(2) 6-4 to qualify for the Miami Masters event! He struggled on serve most of the match but each time he was broken, he broke back. He's been fighting in his two matches, his service numbers haven't been that great, but he's finding ways to compete and win. Simone drew Albert Ramos in the first round of the MD and they will play on Thursday. With a victory over Ramos, Simone will be within a handful of points to the top 100 so he really needs to take advantage of this opportunity and beat Ramos. GL to Simone on Thursday, let's hope he can come away with the victory!
Simone lost 3-6 1-6 to Ramos in Miami, so a very disappointing result, obviously. His ranking is provisionally #108 after his run in Miami. He was on the entry list of Le Gosier but pulled out to rest some niggling physical issues so therefore his next scheduled event is Casablanca qualifying, which starts the weekend after next. Hopefully he qualifies in Casablanca, as the draw is weak, and the opportunity for victories in the MD will be strong. He's close to the top 100 but the biggest goal for right now is making the MD of the French direct, which a few wins in Casablanca would do for him. Hopefully with the tour heading to clay full time Simone can attain some consistently decent results!
Simone took a WC into Barletta this upcoming week and plays Bedene in R1. Bedene is the defending champion so it won't be an easy match for Simone to win. If he does so, however, he has a decent draw to make a deep run. Hopefully he can get past Bedene and have a good tournament in Italy, and assure himself a position at the French Open.
He hit the ball pretty well, served pretty well, and would have beaten most players in the draw. But he wasn't consistent enough overall and Bedene kept making Simone hit the extra shot, as well as counter-punched to a great affect himself. Disappointing result, his form is getting there, but the confidence isn't.
Next tournament is Casablanca qualifying this weekend.
Despite moving bacjwards I think his tennis has been getting better again at this point of the season. He needs to remain consistent though. He is into Round 2 of Bastad aswell, but plays Ferrer. Should still get some ranking points anyway even if he loses.
Simone has been playing great tennis all through qualifying, but a harsh draw means he's facing Ferrer in the second round.
Up first on Suzanne-Lenglen tomorrow. Hope the crowd gets behind him and he can make it a great match!
What a great start to 2015! Winning grand slam doubles title with Fabio.
He rose almost 200 places in the rankings last year and is now back in the top 50 - where he belongs.
Hopefully this positivity will finally lead to a top-10 win this year. Go Simo!
The loss of points at Wimbledon mean he's slipped back to 71 in singles rankings
Hopefully some solid play in the following weeks will push it back up
