As for Gilles, he admits in the other article (I posted it in his forum) that he can't even practice twice a day at the moment.
The sparring-partner has to be available as long as the singles and doubles players need it, for example if one of them wants an extra practice session after the regular training time - that's the job of the substitute, at least that's how Gilles himself described it a few years ago after his first selection!
He says his body is aching all over after one training session only, so Serra would be a much better sparring-partner than Gilles imo. Serra is the perfect sparring-partner, hard-worker, helpful, no big ego...
But it would be better to have a real alternate. Jérémy possibly was not aware that there wasn't even going to be any real option for the 5th player when he made his schedule a while ago.
