Roddick says US tennis in good health

BEIJING (AFP) — Andy Roddick, the top remaining seed in the men's draw at the China Open, said Thursday that the game in the United States is in good health despite no Grand Slam titles in five years.

Roddick, who won his second round match in Beijing against compatriot Brendan Evans 6-4, 6-3, was the last US player to win a major -- the US Open in 2003.

Defending champions the United States were beaten in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup by Spain over the weekend, with Roddick part of the losing team.

But the former world number one remained upbeat about the strength of the game in his home nation.

"I think the biggest thing as far as negative connotations surrounding US tennis is the players we have had before," Roddick said.

"If you compare us with other countries we're very, very strong," he added, saying the US has three players in the top 25 and two in the top ten.

Roddick is currently ranked eighth and James Blake ranked 10, with Mardy Fish 23rd on the list.

He also pointed out the 2007 Davis Cup win and the fact that in the Bryan brothers, the US had the the top-ranked men's doubles team.

Roddick said the game is "doing OK and we have a couple of young guys who are exciting," noting Sam Querrey, also part of the losing team against Spain.

"I think it's going in as good a direction as it has for the past four or five years," he added.

And he said the women's game was strong, with the Williams sisters continuing to win Grand Slams.

Roddick said he felt a responsibility towards younger players coming through, adding: "Andre (Agassi) was great with me when I was coming up."
