Default Re: ~*~ grass season Queens, Nottingham, Wimbledon ~*~

This is from Bob Larson

Wimbledon - First Round
Jonas Bjorkman def. Thomas Johansson (12) 3-6 7-6(7-1) 6-1 6-1

There really must be something wrong with Thomas Johansson's vision still. And grass, with its speed and its bounces calling for peripheral vision, is making the problem worse. Historically, grass has arguably been Johansson's best surface. But now he's lost two straight this year. Obviously he lost control after two sets. It's still hard to imagine this happening a year ago.

Indeed, it didn't happen last year, when Johansson scored his second-best ever Slam result by reaching the semifinal. That was, in round numbers, a third of his points. And he was already slipping -- down to #21 coming in. The loss instantly dropped him to #34. It seems reasonable to assume he'll end up ranked around #36-#38.

Jonas Bjorkman, to be sure, likes grass a lot; he likes anything fast. (Just like Johansson.) But he came here very tired, having played five matches last week. It's going to be interesting to see how winning in the singles affects his doubles.

In terms of ranking, this does Bjorkman no real good. He reached the third round last year, so he needs at least one more win to defend his points from last year and hang onto the Top Sixty ranking he just regained.

Think he wishes the grass season were longer?
