The Russians are coming…
Russia's Davis Cup team may be guilty of being brusque in press conferences, star players Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov may be accused of irreconcilable differences, however, one fact is indisputable: the Russians know how to hit the ball hard.
While Safin and Kafelnikov continue to train together like strangers in the Bercy tennis complex in Paris, mirroring the exact opposite of the "all for one, one for all" French team, their indifference towards each other has not affected their powerful games.
"He [Kafelnikov] has his friends, I have mine," he had said at the beginning of the week.
Kafelnikov, who will undergo varicose vein surgery immediately following the Davis Cup final on Monday, was not very talkative in a press conference on Tuesday but confirmed that the clay courts were "excellent".
Safin, on the other hand, had more to say about Paris and the French opposition, expressing his happiness of being part of such an event. "We travel 11 months together. We know everyone very well," he said. "They are nice people and we don't have to be distant from them. It's just business, a sport. You don't have to take it too seriously.
"The first match is on Friday, we can be relaxed, we can have fun. There's nothing bad," he continued. The French team is happy. We are happy. Everything is cool. Everyone is ready for the show."
Nevertheless, the Russian pair had a fantastic training session on Tuesday
, showing off their impressive serves and dynamic shots.
Aside from Kafelnikov repeatedly stopping to talk intently on his cell phone
, to the dismay of Safin
, the men are unquestionably at the top of their form.
What's a bit of rivalry between team-mates?
