Default Explanation for Murray ineptitude on clay???

Time and time again we see the British #1 get pounded on clay. Its his least successful slam surface and he never looks comfortable out there. Is there a reason for his results on clay? When we look at him without the results he should be the clay goat:

- Great defending/ Pushing tendencies: obviously clay is a very slow surface and defenders should thrive here unfortunately for Murray he hasn't made a clay final much less thrived on the surface.

- Growing up on clay: Unlike some of the American men who haven't seen clay court until there mid 20's. Murray grew up playing on the surface at a fairly young age.

- He has declared it is his favorite surface: Should be half decent on your favorite surface, right?

All things considering, why doesn't he have success on this surface like he's had on the hard or grass courts?

* This is not a Murray bashing thread, I respect Murray as a top 20 tennis player.
