Agassi to play at NASDAQ-100
By MICHELLE KAUFMAN
The NASDAQ-100 Open tournament directors got good news and bad news about two famous toes early Monday morning. Six-time champion Andre Agassi, who pulled out of the Indian Wells quarterfinals with an inflamed big toe last week, is expected in town Tuesday and plans to play. But No. 2 Lleyton Hewitt pulled out with a sore toe after losing the Indian Wells final to Roger Federer Sunday night.
''It's unfortunate because Lleyton is a very popular player, very exciting, and some of our best matches here have involved him,'' said tournament director Adam Barrett. ``He fights for every point and his matches are always high action. We'll definitely miss him.''
Barrett said he fully expects Agassi to play. Agassi was scheduled to play a charity event with Jim Courier in Tampa Monday night and then head to Key Biscayne.
''Everything I'm hearing is that Andre is making his way toward Miami,'' Barrett said. ``It would take a lot for him to miss this tournament. He enjoys Miami. His family enjoys Miami. He loves this tournament. He won't be starting until Friday or Saturday, so he has time to heal.''
Qualifying rounds began Monday and continue Tuesday. The main draw begins Wednesday.
