Hewitt pulls out of Nasdaq; Agassi to play

Lleyton Hewitt, who would have been seeded second at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Key Biscayne, has withdrawn from the tournament, likely because of injuries to his toes.

Hewitt's representatives did not immediately offer a public statement, but he played with the injuries Sunday in a straight set loss to Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final.

His absence kicks Andy Roddick, the part-time Boca Raton resident, up to No. 2 seed, and that guarantees that Roddick would not have to play No. 1 Federer before the final.

Hewitt's injured toes became a problem midway through the third set of his semifinal match against Roddick at Indian Wells. He said Sunday the right toe was worse than the left.

"It's all inflamed," he said. "Nail is going left, right and center," he said. "It's happened a fair few times in the past, but this is probably as bad as it's been."

Andre Agassi apparently will be at the Nasdaq-100 Open, despite having pulled out of the quarterfinals at Indian Wells on Friday with an inflamed big toe.

An Agassi representative told Nasdaq officials Saturday to expect Agassi's wife, Steffi Graf, and their two children Monday. There was no indication whether Agassi will be with them or come to Key Biscayne later.

The tournament begins Wednesday but because Agassi is a seeded player and draws a first-round bye, he would not have to play until Friday or Saturday. He was to have a second MRI Saturday.

Agassi, a former No. 1 currently ranked No. 9, turns 35 next month.
