I was just looking at some replays of Hopman Cup, and there is no doubt that he played much better there than he did in Sydney.

Hopman Cup Bernie was the new version, very aggressive and consistent returning, lots of aces due to a bigger knee bend and excellent footwork.

Sydney Bernie was his old self, cannot get a return to save his life, serve no longer a weapon and footwork lazy as before.
