K is just a constant in a calculation, the factor by which the difference in points is "amplified"... One could easily assign different K for every match depending on tournament strength and round, but then again, we already have that in official ranking. Only the scale would be different. Official ATP ranking is an exponential scale, so to speak. Or you could say that Elo rating scale is logarithmic, with respect to ATP.

That in fact is also significant, and tells something about those player's strength. They tend to do that consciously to adapt their strategy (or, better to say, business plan ) to the official ranking system. But the best ones play at the strongest tournaments, against toughest opponents, and mostly win!
