2013 Davis Cup Draw: World Group
LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN: The Draw for 2013 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas was held at the offices of title sponsor BNP Paribas on 19 September. The draw for the World Group took place alongside four of the six draws for the Zone Groups.
The World Group ties in 2013 will be played over four weekends during the year:
- World Group first round: 1-3 February
- World Group quarterfinals: 5-7 April
- World Group semifinals and play-offs: 13-15 September
- World Group Final: 15-17 November
Reigning champions Spain, who will continue their title defence when they travel to Czech Republic for this year’s Final, have been handed an away tie against Canada in the World Group first round next season.
Spain, the No. 1 seeds, have met Canada just once before at the same stage of the competition in 1991. On that occasion, played on clay at the La Manga Club in Murcia, the home side prevailed 4-1, but the conditions are likely to be very different for their visit to Canada in February.
Spain’s opponents in this year’s Final, Czech Republic, are the No. 2 seeds and face a tricky trip to Switzerland to start their campaign. The Czechs hold a 6-2 head-to-head lead between the two nations, although they lost when the teams last met on Swiss soil in 1998.
The two losing semifinalists in 2012, USA and Argentina, both open their accounts in front of home fans in 2013. The Americans take on Brazil and the Argentines face a tough fixture against Germany.
France have also been handed a home draw in the opening round. Arnaud Clement’s first tie in charge, having taken over from Guy Forget as the new captain, will be versus Israel, who the French have never lost to in their three past meetings.
Kazakhstan, who came through a local derby play-off with Uzbekistan to retain their World Group status, begin next year against Austria, while Italy host Croatia. The Davis Cup champions from 2010, Serbia, travel to Belgium in what will be a first meeting between the teams since Serbia began competing as an independent nation.
