Flavio lost. 6-2 7-6 (4) 3-6 2-6 1-6.

Watched this match in its entirety, and I can't say it was a pretty sight.

Flavio's game plan worked in the beginning, which was to make Cervantes hit as many UEs as possible. And that's what the Spaniard did; copious amounts of mishits that got Flavio the first set, very comfortably. Then he squandered a break in the second set and seemed to be losing momentum, just when Cervantes turned on the error machine again in the breaker. So Flavio up 2-0, with ugly tennis.

Cervantes then takes a bathroom break.

Upon returning, the Spaniard continues his game from the end of the second set (bar the tie-break). He was serving well, getting at least one free point per service game, whereas Flavio's serve of course got him very little (I recall one ace in the entire match). And more importantly, the UE count went down considerably. As Flavio didn't alter his game plan at all, and started making some really bad mistakes, the third and fourth set were very lopsided.

Then Flavio takes a bathroom break.

In the final set, it is clear that Cervantes is starting to cramp, or that he is having some problems with his knee. In any case, he is limping, and stretching a lot. You'd think that Flavio would take advantage of this by starting to slow down the game, hit drop shots etc. in order to make Cervantes run, but he doesn't whatsoever. Instead, he allows the Spaniard to overpower and outhit him. And it's Flavio making the mistakes. It's a pretty sad ending to what was a really ugly match.

Marc Lopez, Roberto Bautista-Agut, Adrian Menendez-Maceiras and Matteo Viola were watching this towards the end.

Flavio still signed autographs, because he's a champ
