Re: Week 40: Sacramento (Entry List)
I was there today, my first time watching live tennis. All in all a good experience, a good lineup for a challenger semi.
Karlovic vs. Querrey:
Both guys were serving pretty well, with Querrey being slightly more effective on serve, hitting nice passing shots. He got the early break, but gave it back with a double fault. He led the tiebreak 5-2, and he was in disbelief (along with a lot of the crowd) by the time the set was over, 7-6 for Karlovic.
In the second set, however, Querrey hit a bit of a hot streak, getting lucky netcords as well (Karlovic made a funny motion as if he were counting the many times that had happened in the match) and got up 4-1. He held the momentum and won the set comfortably.
In the third set, Karlovic served first, and was barely troubled. He started to go after the Querrey second serve, and was really good at the net. To say he's all serve is pretty ignorant, I'd say. Querrey cracked first, with a double fault at deuce and a weak second serve, which Ivo pummeled for a winner and the match.
Blake vs. Kuznetsov
Blake was really sharp, top 100 level for sure. Consistently flat, hard, low shots, never out of position, good serving, good returning. I was really impressed. Kuznetsov, for the most part, didn't have much to hurt Blake. A good serve, went for it a bit too much at times, and decent groundstrokes, but he was outclassed today. Blake got annoyed by the crowd, for some reason, but I suppose that's just par for the course.
I won't be able to watch the final, but based on today, I'd give Blake the edge. Querrey was hitting into the Karlovic wheelhouse at the net today, Blake's flat shots might give him more trouble.
If at first you don't succeed, lower your standards.
My blog, not about tennis, though...
