Gonzalez wins Heineken Open
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -- Fifth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile won his fifth ATP Tour title Saturday, beating Belgium's Olivier Rochus, 6-4, 6-2 in the Heineken Open.
"Some weeks I play good and some not. This was my week,'' said Gonzalez, ranked 23rd in the world. "I think I played almost perfect. I felt really good on the court today and I took every opportunity he gave me.''
Rochus, at 5-foot-5 the shortest player on the men's circuit, beat top-seeded Guillermo Coria or Argentina on the way to the final.
"I tried my best but I think today he was just too good,'' Rochus said. "He was just too strong and he was serving too good. Every shot was perfect.''
The Australian Open begins Monday in Melbourne.
