Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Here's another way of looking at this. What does the losses to teenagers argument tell us?

Does it tell us A.) That Federer's best tennis was never particularly good in the first place or B.) That...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

It's like you're not even reading my posts.

Nope. Federer definitely did get outplayed and beaten by teenagers. The question is whether this happened because Federer's tennis wasn't very good...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

The options are mutually exclusive. Either Federer was playing his best tennis (or close to it), or not. He can have been simultaneously playing at his best and not playing at his best during those...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Puzzling then that you still haven't picked. I am waiting.

No, the second option merely states that Federer didn't play at his best in the matches he lost. We are free to say that he played at...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Of course Federer's level wasn't good enough in the matches he lost; that is why he lost them. The question is whether his level wasn't good enough because his best tennis was only as good as what...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

There are two senses of overrated we might use: Federer is overrated because sometimes he lost matches he should have won, where he had the capacity to play much better than he did, or Federer is...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

He sure did. Here are two possibilities:

1.) I am finally convinced by your arguments. Federer was a great player, but nothing special. He became no.1 only because the previous generation of...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Why wasn't his level good enough?

1.) Because Federer's best tennis just wasn't very good in the first place
2.) Because Federer failed to play the tennis he is capable of.

Reason #1 provides...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

I think what I am saying is pretty straightforward. We need to know how well Federer played in the matches he lost, relative to his opposition - if we want to use those matches to assess his best...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

This discussion is longer than that one. It lasted 8 months because 5555 would wait 2 months between each response.

The "losing to teenagers" argument was presented as a knockdown argument:...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

The term level can refer two things. It can refer to an overall assessment of a players' career, including their consistency, longevity and mental strength. Or, it can refer specifically to the...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

But do you not see that these are different questions? How good is a player's best tennis is a different question to how often does a player play his best tennis. Ferrer is more consistent than...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

When assessing a player’s performance over his entire career, I think there are four main characteristics we care about: consistency, longevity, mental strength and level of play - i.e the quality of...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

But the question is whether losing to teenagers rules out the possibility that you played some of the greatest tennis ever during your career. Do you believe it does?

The point is not that other...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

But saying Federer is a useless fraud, is saying his level wasn't impressive irrespective of whether he was the best player, right? Say we grant that he didn't show the highest level ever, but he...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Yet elsewhere in the same post you say that Federer's losses make him "look like a useless fraud" and that his level wasn't "that high to begin with". Hopefully you can see that not playing at the...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

That's the fact of the matter, yes.

Federer's level was not so high that no matter how badly he played he would always win matches against inexperienced players. So at the lower limit of his...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

No, Federer didn't need to play at his best to beat Gasquet. In fact as badly as he played, he had two match points against him, and two easy forehand putaways.

Sometimes you simply make mistakes...

Re: Bartoli: Peak Djokovic is better than Peak Federer

I just watched the match and Federer did hit some amazing shots from all over the court. He also made a ton of errors off both the forehand and backhand side. The pattern of play went Federer...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Did you watch the video? He is striking 90 mph return winners and hitting the ball from corner to corner and yet he has no weapons or pace on his shots?

In any case, I am still waiting for you to...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Why can't you answer the question about Gasquet?

I have already answered you about Nadal - he always got into Federer's head hence Federer was never able to take the opportunities he did have...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Ok, great finally we make some progress.

So now hopefully you understand why we need to consider the years outside of 04-07 - because are the years where these teenagers must have played their...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

Yes, but the topic isn't whether it is embarrassing or not, it's what Federer's level was in his best years, and whether we can infer that level from the fact he lost to teenagers.

The topic we...

Re: The X on Djokovic Thread [all interview opinions on Djokovic go here]

I'm not using them as a barometer at all. Forget about Federer and the era he played in - the point I am making generalises to any player.

We want to know how good player X's level was in year Y....
