Re: Last set tie-break at USO

This comes up every year, usually with a poll attached. IMHO a grand slam match that reaches 6-6 in the fifth should be decided by real tennis. Real tennis means that in order to win a set, you...

Re: New ATP livescore : complaining thread

Just tried it, and got same experience as many of you. As long as you can't watch the non-main court for more than two seconds, the new scoreboard gets a big fat F. Thanks for the link to the old...

Re: Metz R1: Monfils def. Rochus 6-3,6-2

Also 28/28 (14/14 in each set) of points won when first serve is in. How often does 100% happen?

Re: 2011 Live Commentary Thread

What kind of 2-bit tournament schedules an important match for Monday and then, with no weather delays, doesn't put it on until Tuesday? Maybe I can catch the end of it when I get up for work.

Re: Should the US Open keep 5th set tiebreakers? + Final set TB records of top player

This is how I feel. A match between evenly-match players in a major should be decided by real tennis, not what often amounts to a coin flip. Real tennis means that in order to win a set, you have...

Re: Montreal R2: Monfls def. Bogomolov Jr. 6-2,7-6(5)

Someone answered your wish. The entire tiebreaker is at

Matchpoint starts at 8:00 into the video. And yes, it was a bad miss of an easy floating volley....

Re: 2011 Live Commentary Thread

Thanks again. Turns out the last two points (excluding first serve faults) are shown on the Saturday match highlights on the ATP site, and your descriptions are very accurate.

Re: 2011 Live Commentary Thread

My livestream failed at 6-6 in the tiebreaker :( Anyone care to describe the last two points?

Thanks.

Re: Wimbledon head wants to get grunting out of tennis

I used to watch women's tennis, but don't any more, a big reason being that most of the time it sounds like barnyard animals in heat. The men aren't nearly so annoying.

As for enforcement, I like...

Re: RG Round 1: Monfils def. Phau 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-0

Probably because it didn't include the tournament and which round it was. Then alomst all of the thread titles list the winner first, making it easier to match the player with his score.

Re: Do you believe in the "Hawkeye" ?

I'm sure Hawkeye is better than humans but what is badly needed to be convincing is to show its use on clay courts so the public can see how accurate it is compared to the actual ball marks. ...

Re: San Jose R2: Monfils def. Klahn: 6-3, 6-2

Actually Round One, despite being played after some Round Two matches.

Re: What do you think "Super Saturday" or "Stupid Saturday"?

I don't whine if one semi goes into a second day because of an extended fifth set. My attitude is that the player who can overcome his opponent more quickly deserves the advantage of additional...

Re: What do you think "Super Saturday" or "Stupid Saturday"?

Stupid, for the reasons mentioned above. If not for rainouts, Stupid Saturday guarantees the lowest quality final. Not what I want to see for a major final. With the rainouts, I don't get to see...

Re: USO R2: Stakhovsky def Harrison def 6-3 5-7 3-6 6-3 7-6(6)

This match called out for a non-tiebreak fifth set. Such a shame it was decided by something more resembling a coin flip than real tennis, where you have to break and hold to win. Makes the USO a...

Re: Toronto F Murray d. Federer 7-5 7-5

History in the making. This will very likely be the only tournament whose champion got bageled by Monfils.

Re: Wimbledon needs a fifth set tiebreak!

It's reassuring to see the vast majority of the forum agree on this. The fundamental principle tennis is that in order to win a set, you have to break your opponent's serve while holding your own. ...

Re: Down under 2010

A model of consistency. Monf has won six consecutive sets 6-4. I wouldn't bet on that being a record, though.

Re: Is the forest green surface the most aesthetically pleasing on tour?

I also like purple for the contrast. Then blue and dark green.

Re: "ATP demand survival of the fittest with rule change on cramping"

Good rule change. Common sense needs to prevail at long last. If a player cramps so bad that he can't play, give him the immediate attention he needs, but he loses the current game! Or even that...

Re: USO R3: Isner def. Roddick 7-6(3) 6-3 3-6 5-7 7-6(5)

Absolutely. A deciding set in a major should be settled by real tennis, which means breaking your opponent's serve while holding your own. Using a tiebreak in this situation resembles using a coin...

Re: How many slams for Laver and Rosewall?

The amateur era slams are problematic and not worth too much as they depend so much on who turned pro at what time. Comparisons between amateur and open era are never going to be definitive, but a...
