At the time and for a while they all were good for him and helped push him higher. In terms of results though Gilbert was probably the best for him, helping make the best of what he had IMO

I think he will win more GS than anyone else for the next few years (on current form) but don't write off Djockovic, Del Potro or dare I say it Andy Murray)

Interesting to follow their progress - latest "research" suggests that it takes longer to get into the men's top-100 than it used to and that male players tend to now get there around age 20.
