Re: Novak Djokovic New World #1

I'm very happy for Djokovic. This honor is well deserved after an amazing 52 weeks. And since he already has two slam wins, I suspect the #1 ranking might feel just as good (or better) to him as...

Re: Federer had the toughest opponent?

If a person wants to believe that Fed's competition was relatively favorable or unfavorable, they can probably talk themselves into whatever they want to believe. This is one of those areas that is...

Re: Knowing what we know today, Did Federer overachieve?

I'll start by saying that Federer entered my top tier of all-time greats when he was still at 13 slams. I took into account his deep runs at the French that were only derailed by Nadal. If Fed had...

Re: Federer: "If I compare myself with my 2005 level, I certainly play better today"

I think Fed's more recent results, attitude, comments, etc. are basically in line with what I might have expected for a player of his caliber and career accomplishments, but who is getting older, and...

Re: Which Grand Slam do you like best?

+1

I would especially love to visit Australia, but there's no way I'm willing to sit on an airplane that long! Even in first class, that seat is going to get real uncomfortable after about five...

Re: My new blog - tennis alternative rankings

Hey Francois! Hope life is treating you well these days... :)

I can never resist a thread about ranking systems, so I had to check it out...

My other favorite sport is college football, or what we...

Re: What is with "forget about clay"

Indeed, and at the end of the day, there's no way to know what would have happened if peak Fed had played peak Nadal, and they had met in a variety of settings. Nadal already proved that he owned...

Re: What is with "forget about clay"

Yep! Their h2h is only one stat out of many, and while I marvel at Nadal's career, I don't personally put his career accomplishments at Fed's level. Not yet, anyway, and maybe not ever. I have to...

Re: What is with "forget about clay"

The issue I have with this is that Nadal is younger than Fed, so to me it's a little unfair to say that Nadal wasn't up to this task, or that task, during Fed's peak years. We have to let Nadal...

Re: Will Federer become number 1 again?

The thing about records is there are often elements of good fortune/bad fortune that come into play to twist the numbers. Sometimes they twist your way, sometimes not.

Take Sampras, for example. ...

Re: Greg Couch: It's Time to Stop Rafael Nadal's Cheating

I basically agree with you, and I posted something similar in another thread.

I make no excuses for Nadal wasting time between points, and apparently receiving some occasional "coaching" from the...

Re: Tennis players who grunt may have advantage, study says

I don't care for grunting, and I don't like it when players like Nadal and Djokovic take too much time between points. But whether you are talking about one of these issues, "coaching", or whatever...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

I will add one more thought after all, because I like what you said about players playing for titles and not surfaces.

BTW, I have no objection to continuing a friendly debate as long as a new point...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

Sorry, but if I haven't been able to articulate my point well enough by now, I'm probably not going to be able to do it all...

Regarding Borg, though, he could have "traded" for Fed's 2006 without...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

Well, not necessarily...

The difference is, once we start considering other years together, we're really just starting to look at an entire career. Fed won the French in 2009, so he wouldn't have...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

As a fan, I think Fed's best season (take your pick which one) and Nadal's best season (2010) are both worthy of consideration as the best since Laver. I'm not excluding any other player's seasons...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

Yep, I think you understood my point perfectly. It's not so much that I think Nadal's season is "better" than someone else's. Rather, I simply imagine it being a VERY appealing combination to many...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

While winning a NCYGS would be quite an accomplishment, the thread is about calendar year accomplishments...

To me, the whole "dominance" argument sounds like a fan's perspective, not a player's...

Re: Poll: Nadals 2010 season vs Federers 2007 season

I would normally say that it would be appropriate to wait until the end of the season, but in this case, I don't mind giving an opinion now.

If someone wants to look at this from a fan's...

Re: Maybe Pete just didn't try hard enough

Agreed. Good post.

At the heart of the problem, Sampras was never comfortable on clay. He won a few big clay court matches, but even then, it just wasn't a surface he liked playing on. And I have...

Re: Michael Russell Withdraws Due To Diarrhea

Reminds me of a really stupid joke:

Did you hear they discovered the cause of diarrhea? It runs in your genes.

Re: RANT- no way is nadal ahead of borg, you cannot be serious

Federer, Sampras, Borg, and Laver are at the top level, as far as I'm concerned. I don't put Nadal there yet, so I agree that he is not at Borg's level at this time. However, whether anyone likes...
