Re: Who is the greatest player to have never won a slam?

Definitely Mecir. In my opinion he was comfortably better than Ríos.

His straight sets thumping of a peak Lendl in the 1987 Key Biscayne final (a tournament that had a 128 player draw and was best...

Re: Where would you rank these PEAK one handed backhands of the past 30yrs?

His 2 standout performances were his victories over a peak Sampras in the 1993 YEC final (Sampras was at the absolute height of his powers from 1993-1994) and against Muster at RG in 1996 (Muster had...

Re: Where would you rank these PEAK one handed backhands of the past 30yrs?

Michael Stich had the most complete one handed backhand I've seen in the time that I've followed tennis. It was strong in all departments; returning serve, topspin, slice, cross court, down the line,...

Re: Agassi or McEnroe?

Yeah that's true.

From 1976-1982 especially the tournament was a complete joke. In those years, Borg, Connors, McEnroe and Lendl never showed up there once. Not only was it less important than the...

Re: Agassi or McEnroe?

Of course Agassi's career went into decline afterwards. He said in his own words that he struggled to get over this defeat and things went downhill for him afterwards. 1995 had been the only season...

Re: Agassi or McEnroe?

It's interesting that both these players lost hugely important and decisive US Open finals against a major rival 10 years apart, and their careers both swiftly went into decline afterwards.

McEnroe...

Re: Agassi or McEnroe?

Comparing these 9 players you listed, Agassi is the only one who wasn't the best player in the world in at least 3 different years:

Connors - 1974, 1976 and 1982 (I would say that Ashe was the best...

Re: The 80s is considered the strongest era of all time, and it also has the least am

The 80s did seem to have the right balance in terms of having enough surface polarisation and diversity, but with 'fast surface' tennis not being too serve orientated, although guys like Becker,...

Re: Agassi or McEnroe?

Definitely McEnroe as he was far more dominant than Agassi. He was genuinely the best player in the world in 1981, 1983 and 1984, despite the fact that his 1982 year end no.1 ranking was a joke....

Re: It baffles me that some people place Edberg over Becker.

Becker was incredibly bitter about that match and then accused of Muster of doping afterwards, which was pretty shocking, as usually he was very gracious in defeat (some-times too gracious like after...

Re: It baffles me that some people place Edberg over Becker.

One thing that enhances Becker's CV is his amazing Davis Cup record. I think that a players individual Davis Cup match record (and not necessarily how many times they won the competition) can be an...

Re: What are the chances of Connors being stripped of 2 YE#1 titles in the future?

The ranking system in the 70s and early 80s certainly does sound like it was a complete joke.

I would rank Ashe as the best player in the world in 1975. He won 8 titles that year including...

Re: Big Rumour: ATP going to take Portugal Open out of calendar in 2015

This time last year weren't there rumours that the tournament was going to be taken out of the 2014 ATP calendar? Obviously those rumours didn't turn out to be true and the event survived for another...

Re: Is Sampras 6 consecutive YE #1 the most overrated tennis record?

I suppose given that the ranking system is rolling, you could argue that Federer being the world no. 1 after Wimbledon 6 years in a row from 2004-2009, is just as impressive as Sampras being the year...

Re: Cuevas is about to pull off one of the greatest vulture moves ever

Sensible and smart from Pablo. It would be great to see him seeded at Melbourne next year.

Pablo is just pure awesomeness anyway.

Re: Instances of a reigning GS Champion being decimated by another ?

RG 1978 - The reigning Wimbledon champion Borg destroyed the reigning RG champion 6-1 6-1 6-3 in the final.

Wimbledon 1984 - The reigning Wimbledon champion McEnroe destroyed the reigning US Open...

Re: Andy Murray believes Martina Navratilova is the best player in tennis history

Out of all the great tennis players, male or female, Navratilova is by far the most arrogant out of the lot, so Murray's words will have massaged her giant ego:

I asked Martina Navratilova: "How do...

Re: Should players be able to make a living playing Challengers?

Some good suggestions raised above I like them.

Of course players should be able to make a living playing in challengers, not a luxurious living but a decent living none the less. It's ridiculous...

Re: The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was a result of American aggression

I guess a significant outcome of Pearl Harbour was that it led to Hitler declaring war on the USA. I could well be wrong, but according to the terms of the Axis pact with Japan, he wasn't obliged to...

Wink Re: Who are you fav active basketball players?

D

Yeah in México where I live tennis is largely a fringe sport. Long-standing top 10 players like Ferrer and Berdych could walk into most offices in the country and no-one would know who they were,...

Re: the UK is doomed, 2015 GE is pointless

Yeah as much as I have enjoyed watching guys like Jeremy Paxman grill politicians in the past, sometimes I do think that they go too far and treat the politicians as if they are common criminals....

As a tennis fan I'm sort of jealous that the our primary team event the Davis Cup will never be anywhere near as big as the Ryder Cup, but then again that is always going to be impossible given the...

Re: the UK is doomed, 2015 GE is pointless

The Lib Dems actually lost 5 seats during the 2010 election compared to their 2005 tally, with any gains they made from Labour more than offset by the losses they suffered in marginal seats to the...

DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose and Dirk Nowitzki are my favourite active players.

Yeah basketball is a much more popular sport globally than tennis, with it being huge in...

Re: What's wrong with Swedish tennis?

Swedish tennis enjoyed 4 consecutive hugely successful decades in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, so after over-achieving for so long, it's actually amazing that it took so long for a decline to set...
