Re: What was the name of the Spanish player from 2002 ...

The player was a favourite of the crowd on the SteveG boards, so yes, the statisticians might know.

Tournament after tournament, this player would plow his way through 128 qualie fields in Spain...

What was the name of the Spanish player from 2002 ...

What was the name of the Spanish player from 2002 who had something like an 80+% win percentage in qualies but who could not win his first ATP ranking point for the longest time? Did he ever manage...

Re: Has any player in history ever come back from surgery and been successful?

Kudos for the Mantilla mention. Up there with Muster's comeback.

Pato Clavet also came back from knee surgery and went on to own Agassi.

Re: Why isn't Gulbis playing singles for Latvia vs. Austria DC?

Yes, I was there. Peya got tight against 2 sick returners of the ball. Libietis settled down and got stronger.

Gulbis may not have felt up to 3 best of 5 set matches over 3 days.

Both Gulbis...

Re: Why isn't Gulbis playing singles for Latvia vs. Austria DC?

Thank you. I personally think Libietis could have pulled an upset against Fischer, certainly more chance than the 2 nominated players. In fact, it's Libietis I want to watch, not Gulbis!

Re: Why isn't Gulbis playing singles for Latvia vs. Austria DC?

But Gulbis is playing the tie. Treating it more like an exhibition. I'm skipping today, will drive to the tie tomorrow.

Why isn't Gulbis playing singles for Latvia vs. Austria DC?

Gulbis is only scheduled to play doubs.

The first 2 match ups today are dog meat.

What's the scoop?

Re: Ballkids at IW??

There are plenty of school age children living close to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Palm Desert lies across the street, La Quinta starts a few hundred yards away. There's an elementary school...

Re: Egypt F3 Final: [4] Travaglia def. [5] Kubler 6-0 6-0

There are legendary stories of players tanking in Egypt to make a flight out. Where is Kubler playing this coming week?

Re: Kavcic under possible betting investigation

The Zagreb WIFI and desktop connection in the players' lounge were all but useless this week. Just sayin'.

Re: Coach Annacone Compares Federer and Sampras

I think Roger will re-write the book on this. The last "top" player who came close to this description was Bjorkman.

Fundamentally, Federer is different from many top players in that he did not...

Re: Coach Annacone Compares Federer and Sampras

Duong, I really enjoy your comments. Roger may well play Seniors events but only in conjunction with playing competitive doubles. So long as his shoulder holds out, he will feature in the Slams,...

Re: Wimbledon R1: [28] Stepanek def. Stakhovsky 6-1,1-0ret.

I hope I can thank Yves in person. Sergiy is a funny, sociable guy who is failing to man up. Sergiy, you are a champion, you don't need to tarnish your rep. by doing this. It does not matter who...

Re: Income inequality grows on ATP Tour

Action Jackson,

I'm late to this thread. As usual, I agree with the points you've elucidated. One additional one missed by everyone is that "hot" young players like Ryan Harrison who have yet to...

Re: At the department of forgotten players

Beating a member of the Armada post Santana and ante Nadal at Wimbledon was hardly a feat. For most journeymen players it was found money.

I do remember Jeff. He was one American who hung around...

I never saw him play without his backward facing cap on.

Memorable moment of Gunnarsson completely pwnd by Stefan Edberg at Indian Wells and Jan picked up the folding chair to use as a racquet for...

Re: Apart from Muzza, did any other male player was ever trained by an woman?

Chesnokov was coached right up to the end of his career by a woman.

Chang was baby sat by his mother in his prime. His brother Carl was more a hitting partner.

Re: Orleans R1: Q 2nd round loser Menendez def. Lacko 6:4 5:7 6:3

Usually when there's a lot of rain and the first round not getting completed until Thursday (or conceivably later).

I saw first hand how an ALT who lost 1QR in qualies ended up 1 out on the LL list.

Robert Carretero

6 years later Carlos Moya asked me to look up his pal Carretero's result(s) that particular week from the Futures tournament at which he was attempting a comeback.

Re: US Open Final - Melzer/Petzschner d. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-2, 6-2

JMG,

The problem is that this is what is called a "Gentleman's Call".

Unfortunately a "Gentleman's Call" is in conflict with being "Professional" these days. Once, Petzschner turns his back, the...

Re: USOpen R1: Karlovic/Moser def Bryans 6-4 2-6 6-2

Re: Atlanta doubles match heats up—on Twitter

Very good points.

Because of the nature of entry for doubles tournaments, the ability to get w/c's and having a high ranked partner is 90% of the game these days, if you're outside the Top 50. ...

Re: Atlanta doubles match heats up—on Twitter

Sour grapes is it.

Some points :

1. Jamie is Andy's older brother, just as Thomas Blake is James Blake's older sibling.

2. The doubles game(s) will always have lots of tanks and withdrawals. ...
