Re: Novak Djokovic: "Not very happy with my form and game. Elbow injury is gone"

Well, the younger players in general are pretty weak, and none are a match for a 7 time Wimbledon champion, even one who has declined. In the other slams Federer's record is a lot poorer.

Nadal's...

Re: Novak Djokovic: "Not very happy with my form and game. Elbow injury is gone"

At 33/34 players generally take longer to recover and find going deeper in tournaments more difficult (if they are even still playing). That's why reaching the finals of a slam at that age is so...

Re: Novak Djokovic: "Not very happy with my form and game. Elbow injury is gone"

If age is irrelevant then it should be no different to a 25 year old getting into a final.

Re: Novak Djokovic: "Not very happy with my form and game. Elbow injury is gone"

Federer's game is pretty good in Bo3 on faster surfaces. On slower surfaces and Bo5, not so much. At Wimbledon he was able to hang with Djokovic for 2 sets and then he was physically done. He just...

Re: Federer's new service box return strategy?

I'm saying it's a clear example of disrupting an opponents game, by making them repeatedly hit shots that they are very uncomfortable hitting.

From what I can tell you are now saying that...

Re: Federer's new service box return strategy?

All tennis players want to disrupt their opponent's game. All tennis strategies are designed to disrupt the opponent's game. When Nadal hits high topspin balls to Federer's backhand is that gaining...

Re: Federer's new service box return strategy?

All of the strategies I listed disrupt a server's rhythm. In fact the only difference between running to the side and running to the net is the direction of the movement. Yet one is perfectly fine...

Re: Federer's new service box return strategy?

Why is running to the net not fair play? Is hitting returns to the server's feet fair play? Is hitting a dropshot off a return fair play? Is moving to one side as they serve, fair play?

Re: Federer's new service box return strategy?

Wow, how despicable. To think that a tennis player is trying make his opponent play badly in order to win points.

Edit: Other examples of horrendous cheating include making your opponent hit awkward...

Re: Roger Federer: “I think I'm a better player now than when I was at 24"

I wonder how Djokovic and Nadal will be doing when they are 34.

Re: Anyone else just hoping Roger makes the USO Final?

Robredo and Seppi are just likely to lose in the next round, so I don't see how that would be good for tennis unless you are a Federer hater.

Re: Is Djokovic greater than Lendl?

5555 will basically never concede defeat on anything. The last dispute I had with him he would wait two months (!) between each reply, and then ignore the points I had made. So it is pretty much...

Re: There is no such thing as a bad match up.

Why? What decides that the size of the sample you need other than arbitrary stipulation?

Re: There is no such thing as a bad match up.

OK, Here are a couple:

Ferrer Del Potro 6 - 3, Del Potro Soderling 4 - 1, Soderling Ferrer 10 - 4
Blake Davydenko 7 - 1, Davydenko Gonzalez 6 - 0, Gonzalez Blake 6 - 3

Re: There is no such thing as a bad match up.

If match ups don't exist then how do you explain situations where player A consistently beats player B, player B consistently beats player C, and player C consistently beats player A?

Re: There is no such thing as a bad match up.

I used the example of the two handed backhand to demonstrate the ludicrousness of the claim that a player has "complete freedom" to change their style of play.

But you can swap out "two handed...

Re: There is no such thing as a bad match up.

All left handed players have the same forehand? All players with a 1 handed backhand play the same? All surfaces play the same, so beating Nadal on hardcourt is the same as beating him on clay?

Federer can switch to two handed backhand and dominate Nadal?

Re: Federer's stats: 2006 Wimby final vs. 2015 Wimby final

If you get broken once per set then you will still play 3-4 of your own service games as well as the 6 on your opponent's serve. To lose that one service game you just need to make two errors from an...

Re: Federer's stats: 2006 Wimby final vs. 2015 Wimby final

No. This is how the debate has gone

Me: Winners to unforced error stats don't give you the complete picture because they don't tell you how well someone played in the most critical stages of a...

Re: Federer's stats: 2006 Wimby final vs. 2015 Wimby final

Did you read my post? My point is that 1. is obviously false, hence you are attacking a strawman.

And if is not the sole measure, then you cannot make claims like "Federer AT MINIMUM PLAYED AN...

Re: Federer's stats: 2006 Wimby final vs. 2015 Wimby final

You are mixing up two claims:

1.) A player's W/UE ratio is not relevant to how well they played
2.) A player's W/UE ratio shouldn't be the sole measure of how well they played.

Claim 1. is easy to...

Re: Federer's stats: 2006 Wimby final vs. 2015 Wimby final

So on your definition, even if you donate every set you play with terrible errors, we can say that you are playing well - so long as you reach the end of each set with a good winners/UE ratio?
