Re: Top 5 players of all time?

Is it "pretty obvious" the Sun will rise tomorrow? Or not? And is this a matter of fact?

It is pretty obvious. And it is a matter of fact. But it's not something we can prove.

Re: Wimbledon 2008 F vs AO 2017 F - which one is more epic?

Wimbledon 2008 is laughably overrated. Even Nadal played better in 2007, let alone Federer. The overall quality was higher in AO 2017 than in W 2008. Yes, 2008 was dramatic & represented a...

Re: Federer is mentally toughest of the Big 4 - Discussion thread

Everybody seems to miss the point that Nadal, in his prime at least, played more aggressively than usual on big points. For a defensive player to play more aggressively the bigger the point &...

Re: Better serve ? Sampras or Federer ?

Sampras hit with similar accuracy but more power, so it's a slam-dunk isn't it?

Re: Federer in the hunt for Connors's records for wins, titles, finals, etc...

That partly reflects the fractured nature of the tour in the 1970s. If it weren't for the tournament I'd never have heard of Indian Wells.

The bottom line is, Connors played & won a lot in a...

Re: Tipsarevic: Federer would not stand a chance playing Novak from last year

I expect something's got lost in translation or been misreported. Any version of Federer would have a chance against any version of Djokovic - & vice versa. How big a chance would of course depend...

Re: Doping in Tennis Thread (No accusations w/o proof) vol. 2a

If the lottery is rigged in your favour, it means you're likely to win it. But just because you win the lottery, doesn't mean it's likely the lottery was rigged in your favour.

Re: Federer is mentally toughest of the Big 4 - Discussion thread

Federer did used to be pretty clutch you know. That's one of the things that helped him dominate the tour. He didn't win every match 6-1, 6-1.

Re: Srdjan Djokovic: Novak will become the GOAT

To be in the conversation Novak basically needs to have his old coach's, Becker's, career from now until he retires. He's got to achieve in his 30s as much as Becker achieved in his entire career.

Re: new page of Fedal rivalry

People have been telling Roger to change his approach to Nadal, well, ever since they started playing, but especially since 2008/9, when he suffered a disastrous series of losses on different...

Re: Pennsylvania again rejects historical marker tennis great Bill Tilden

Again, I evidently haven't been clear. You might want to talk about age-of-consent legislation: I don't. I'm talking about what a decent person would or wouldn't do. By a decent person I mean a...

Re: Doping in Tennis Thread (No accusations w/o proof) vol. 2a

In Federer's case, perhaps having his 1st long rest in 20 years on the tour helped. Just a thought.

Re: Why is Murray the toughest Big 4 matchup for Kyrgios?

Kyrgios isn't great at generating his own pace, particularly from the backhand side; he prefers to feed off his opponent's pace. And Murray is adept at denying him that.

Re: Kyrgios's game isn't CLOSE to being slam-caliber

He's a big-match player, he's tactically intelligent, & he has a touch of genius. I'd be surprised if he didn't win at least a couple of slams.

Re: ATP Miami Open Final: [4] R. Federer def. [5] R. Nadal 6-3 6-4

Steve Tignor summed up the change in the rivalry nicely: Rafa is thinking. Roger is playing. Used to be the other way round.
I don't know why Nadal's fans are so down. This is easily the best...

Oh. What the hell are we all talking about then?

I'll stick to the tennis from now on.

Re: Miami SF: [4] Federer def. [12] Kyrgios 7-6(9) 6-7(9) 7-6(5)

There's a close correlation between poverty, low status, lack of male role models, inequality, & crime. In American cities & much of Africa, black people are poor & have low status, in hideously...

Re: Pennsylvania again rejects historical marker tennis great Bill Tilden

I think we're talking at cross-purposes. I'm not advocating a particular age of consent. I couldn't care less about it. I'm not talking about legislation. I'm talking about what a decent,...

Re: July 9, 1984: Closest ever number 1 grab in history?

Yeah that makes sense, but it still seems weird. After all, Mac was 1983 YE No. 1 too. Even if that was from points Jan-Jul, he made even more points in the same period in 1984, so... Put it this...

Re: WWW Miami 2017 Final : [4] Federer vs [5] Nadal [XXXVII]

Not sure if Fed will have enough left in the tank physically, but I guess if he keeps the rallies short as in Oz & IW he has a chance. Playing that game without making too many errors takes a lot of...

Re: Pennsylvania again rejects historical marker tennis great Bill Tilden

Being able to consent to sexual relations & being able to cope with the consequences of doing so don't necessarily go together. You must surely be aware that the psychological effects of consensual...

Re: Miami SF: [4] Federer def. [12] Kyrgios 7-6(9) 6-7(9) 7-6(5)

Just because young black males are responsible for a disproportionate amount of crime, doesn't mean there isn't any anti-black racism. It makes it more likely. Perhaps you'd like to tell us all...

Re: Pennsylvania again rejects historical marker tennis great Bill Tilden

These posts by superstition2 are highly impressive & convincing. I'm inclined to agree that Tilden wasn't some kind of depraved pervert. The problem is more that a 50-year-old man is far more...

Re: Miami SF: [4] Federer def. [12] Kyrgios 7-6(9) 6-7(9) 7-6(5)

Okay true, point taken. In mitigation though, don't forget that Borg serve-volleyed at Wimbledon. He adapted his natural clay-based game for faster surfaces. It was never his style. But at least...
