Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 players ever (Murray one slam away from making l

I agree.

Kriek's highest ranking was #7. He won only 14 titles in his career. His AO's were very weak.

I would never put Kriek above Murray or Roddick or Stich, to name 3 players off the top of...

Re: Top-10 Greatest Tennis Player All Time

How are the pro tours weighted? I think tours, which were long series of matches between a few top players, were more important and more lucrative than the pro majors.

Ignoring pro tours would...

Re: Did Sampras ever choke in big match?

The word choke is very much overused, but the closest i can think of is Sampras' 2002 Davis Cup loss on grass to Corretja. I think it was the only match on grass Sampras lost after leading 2 sets to...

Re: Indian Wells Final: Federer def. Isner 7-6, 6-3

Connors was one of the best ever, played for a very long time, and played many small events.

For example, Connors won a career high 15 events in 1974. He won Wimbledon, USO and AO, but was banned...

Re: Most butchered slam efforts of all time

A good example from an earlier period is Stefan Edberg in 1990 USO.

Edberg was the #1 player in the world after beating his great rival Becker in Wimbledon, won LA and then Cincinnati, losing only 2...

Re: When Federer won his first slam in 2003, did people think he would win any more?

After Federer won in 2003, i saw a headline, i think of a British paper, "The First of Many?" I think most fans thought he would win several more. Here is another example:...

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (a history lesson)

That pros were better than amateurs is not in question. But amateurs would have occasionally beaten pros, just as young, lower ranked players occasionally beat top players. Pre-Open Era majors with...

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (a history lesson)

Nice work!

Something i have a bit of a problem with, though, which Echoes also mentioned, is saying things like Rosewall won 23 slams and Laver won 19. It is not fair to modern players to equate...

Re: 10 years since the legendary 2001 Wimbleodn final - Goran's fairytale run

That was by far the most dramatic match i have ever seen. Very tense. Goran would have game point, then double fault, then double fault again to give Rafter break point.:haha: But then would get...

Re: Emerson – why not in the running for greatest?

All of Emerson's 12 majors were vs amateurs. Best players (Rosewall, Hoad, Laver, Gonzales, etc) were on the professional circuit.

This is one of the many, many problems of just looking at...

Re: Sampras interview "Roger's competition hasn't been as great"

I think Sampras' era was probably more difficult, probably more because the surfaces were more different and there were more specialists, than because there were more great players. I think overall...

Re: Most impressive/difficult slam "double" in modern era?

Thanks for the correction. I knew i would miss something.

Imo, RG+Wimbledon is probably easier than ever to win, at least in the Open Era. The 2 surfaces are far more similar than they have ever...

Re: Del Potro to play an exhibition in a few days

Good for him, and for us.

It sucks for a young star to miss an entire year. Del Potro only played 6 matches, and 2010 was a lot weaker without him.

I hope he returns to form soon.

Re: Most impressive/difficult slam "double" in modern era?

in Open Era:

all 4:
Laver in '69. 3 of 4 on grass

AO, RG, Wimbledon:
Laver in '69

AO, Wimbledon, USO:
Laver in '69

Re: Rank the popularity of Tennis in the world.

In the US, i would guess something like:

1. NFL
-- by far the most popular, aided by playing mostly on weekends
2. College Football
-- also played on weekends
3. Baseball
-- less popular than it...

Re: Imagine if rather than 2 HC slams a year, there were two CC slams a year....

If 2 majors were clay, most players would focus on clay, and probably all of them would work more to improve their game on clay.

Same as when most tournaments were on grass, players served and...

Re: Was 2010 a "bad" tennis year?

Imo, it was not a great year.

I think the only top player who was not disappointing was Nadal, but i think Nadal was not at his best. He played better in 2008 than 2010. His ground game,...

Re: Nadal becomes only 8th man in the open era to reach the final in all 4 majors

fantastic accomplishment by Nadal. amazing how much he has improved.

Courier sticks out here, but it was a bit of a transitional period and he was a great player in his prime.

great to see...

Re: UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Longest tennis match ever! Mahut vs Isner (6-4,3-6,6-7,7-6 59-5

not the highest quality match, but it is a once in a lifetime sporting event.

we are lucky to be able to see it.

absolutely amazing that Mahut and Isner have been able to play at that level (so...

Re: Open-Era Slams: *RAFA up to equal 7th [better than McEnroe & Wilander?]

i would combine tier 4 with tier 3 and probably put Agassi in tier 3. tiers 2 and 3 are close, though.

i think Borg may have a better DC singles record, but McEnroe also dominated...

Re: IW SF: Ljubicic def Nadal 3-6 6-4 7-6(1)

i hope Ljubicic wins the title.

i think this would be the biggest title of his career, and he has always seemed like a nice guy.

Re: Federer, Rafa, Agassi, Sampras to play Haiti benefit on March 12th

seems unfair to have Nadal and Agassi play the GOATS. i thought they would have paired 1 and 2 vs 1 and 2, not 1 and 1 vs 2 and 2.

Re: It's Nastase's 1973 the best season ever for a player on clay ?

and in '73, Borg was only 17 years old, before Borg became a dominant player.

Vilas probably should have been ranked #1 in '77 (won RG, USO and 14 other titles, was runner up at AO and won 46...

Re: Borg (1978-79) Vs Nadal (2008)

very good argument about future hypothetical rackets.

modern tennis is more entertaining to me than older finesse tennis, but that is likely related to growing up watching the faster modern game.
