How well known is Roger in your country? (f.k.a: A question to the Americans here)

A couple of years ago people were saying how in the U.S apart from the tennis fans who follow the game, your average Joe didn't know who Roger Federer was.

My question is this: now that Roger has won 2 U.S. Opens, 2 Masters Cups (in Houston), and 5 Master Series events on U.S. soil- does he finally get the recognition he deserves? Does your average guy/gal who goes to watch the U.S. Open on Labour Day know who he is?

As long as he's not American, and out of the tabloids, he will go unnoticed I think...

No, he is still unknown but sports show are giving his achievements more attention. If he wins RG, media here will have a field day because they love comparing Woods and Federer.

He is still relatively unknown; however, he is talked about more and more on espn sport shows............ I agree with Dirk, if he wins the FO, then we will hear more about him because usually Tiger's name isn't far behind when they are talking about Roger. But, over the past 2 years, his visibility has increased in the US.

No. He's still Mr Nobody here. Maybe after five more US Open slam wins some of them will finally start to recognize his name. ;)

Comparison with Tiger Woods... Comparison with Sampras or Borg is already leading nowhere, so with Tiger Woods...

I'm living in Switzerland and let me tell you that here he's huge ! People are very proud and Swiss Tv tries to air his finals as much as possible.
But in a way people get spoiled and don't realise what he's doing because it's so rare in Switzerland to have all time greats in a sport. Plus there is competition with winter sports and football.
In France Roger is famous but not that much. Since Noah tennis is not that big in France unfortunately, even some DC matches are not on TV... the fact that he speaks French helps and when he's in Monte-Carlo or Roland Garros he gives very relaxed interviews and people get to know him... hopefully, when he starts winning a few French Opens things will change !

actually people here know about federer. They just dont care too much about tennis i think because the media never cares to show it to them on a consistent basis.

If roger maybe appeared on more shows on ESPN, i think he would def get more recognition. He is starting to realize this and is appearing more frequently in the media.

Re: A question to the Americans here

Even in Switzerland I personnaly feels that he remains relatively unknown... I mean, of course everybody knows him here and the media relate his victories and main matches reports... But in fact, only a few minority gives a damn to sport here and when they do it's mainly on soccer or ice hockey...

I admit it annoys me sometimes when the media and the people praise Tom Luthi or Stephane Lambiel achievements too much, Tom seems to be a half-god here, and he's actually a babe in sport's world compared to Roger...

They do it with Woods to show how dominant Roger is, infact many sport pundits talk about how Roger is more dominant in tennis than Woods in Golf.

He has to move to the US and get involved into a huge sex/drug scandal. Then may be he'll become a household name here. :p

There's just not enough buzz created around Roger. Even sports personalities have to be marketed........and part of that blame falls on the ATP. Heck, I've never seen Beckham play, soccer isn't a big sport in the US, but there is so much marketing surrounding him that he's a fairly well known sports figure in the US.
